Rear Driveshafts



One-Piece Shaft
  1. Place the transmission in neutral.
  2.  
  3. Release the park brake, if applied.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Mark the rear universal joint to the drive shaft flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining bolts and clamps.
  10.  
  11. Remove the driveshaft from the pinion drive flange.
  12.  
  13. Remove the driveshaft from the transmission/transfer case.
  14.  
  15. Using tape or a rubber band, wrap the U-Joint bearing caps to ensure the bearing caps do not separate from the U-Joint.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove the tape or rubber band from the U-Joint.
  2.  
  3. Install the driveshaft in the transmission/transfer case.
  4.  
  5. Align the driveshaft with the reference marks on the pinion flange.
  6.  
  7. Install the clamps and retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

Two-Piece Shaft
  1. Place transmission in neutral.
  2.  
  3. Release the park brake, if applied.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
    NOTE
    The following service procedure will ensure the proper alignment of all U-Joint to the transmission, center bearing support and the rear drive axle pinion flange.

  6.  
  7. Rotate the driveshafts so that all the external clips are aligned.
  8.  
  9. Mark the rear driveshaft to the pinion drive flange, center bearing support, and transmission.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clamps and retaining bolts for the rear driveshaft at the pinion drive flange and the center bearing.
  12.  
  13. Using tape or a rubber band, wrap the rear U-Joint bearing caps to ensure that they not separate from the U-Joint.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear driveshaft from the center bearing.
  16.  
  17. Remove the mounting bolts for the center bearing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the center bearing from the crossmember.
  20.  
  21. Remove the driveshaft from the transmission.

To install:

  1. Align the reference marks on the driveshaft to the transmission.
  2.  
  3. Install the driveshaft in the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Install the center bearing to the crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Install the center bearing mounting bolts. Tighten the center bearing mounting bolts to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
  8.  
  9. Rotate the driveshaft so that the alignment marks and the pinion yoke are in alignment.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tape and or rubber band.
  12.  
  13. Position the U-Joint in the pinion yoke.
  14.  
  15. Install the clamps and retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining clamp bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Double check the alignment marks to ensure that they are aligned properly
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.
