Adjustment




NOTE
The rear brakes must be adjusted manually after replacing the rear brake shoes.

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjuster nut for the park brakes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Using a measuring gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.
    NOTE
    When performing the following service procedure, ensure that the measuring gauge is level, before taking the measurement.

  9. Adjust the brakes shoes until there is approximately 0.76mm (.030 in.) clearance between the rear brake shoes and the rear brake drum.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake drum.
  12.  
  13. With heavy force, apply the brake pedal 2 times in order to center and adjust the brake shoes.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the drums again for light drag. If necessary, repeat the previous step for adjusting the brakes.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the park brake.
  20.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Brake drum
     
    Adjuster assembly

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate with high temperature silicone grease.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake cable in the lever
     
    Primary shoe
     
    Retractor spring on primary shoe
     
    Secondary shoe

  4.  
  5. Adjust the brake shoes so there is 0.030 inch (0.76mm) clearance between the lining and the drum.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the parking brake cable as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Refill the master cylinder and pump pedal to attain full brake pedal before road-testing the vehicle.
