Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Front
1997-02 Models
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Detach the speed sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower sensor cable mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the speed sensor cable mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Check the speed sensor pole piece for presence of foreign materials; remove any dirt, etc.
  12.  
  13. Check the pole piece for damage; replace speed sensor if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Check the speed sensor cable for short or open circuit, and replace with a new one if necessary.
  16.  
  17. To check for cable short or open, bend or stretch the cable while checking for continuity.
  18.  
  19. Check the sensor ring for damage including tooth chipping, and if damaged, replace the sensor ring assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the speed sensor, being careful not to hit the speed sensor pole piece during installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the speed sensor mounting bolts and tighten to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the speed sensor cable mounting bolts and tighten as follows:
    1. Lower bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Upper bolt: 52 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
      NOTE
      Make sure that the white line marked on the cable is not twisted when connecting the speed sensor cable.

  7. Attach the speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

2003-04 Models

NOTE
On 2WD vehicles, the hub unit bearing and front wheel speed sensor are a single unit. The hub unit bearing and front wheel speed sensor cannot be disassembled. They must be replaced as a complete unit.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Detach the speed sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor cable mounting bolt (Frame side).
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor cable mounting bolt (Upper Arm and Knuckle side).
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor mounting bolt, then remove the speed sensor.

  11. Check the speed sensor pole piece for presence of foreign materials; remove any dirt, etc.
  12.  
  13. Check the pole piece for damage; replace speed sensor if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Check the speed sensor cable for short or open circuit, and replace with a new one if necessary.
  16.  
  17. To check for cable short or open, bend or stretch the cable while checking for continuity.
  18.  
  19. Check the sensor ring for damage including tooth chipping, and if damaged, replace the sensor ring assembly.
  20.  
  21. Check the outside of the unit for damage.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install speed sensor and take care not to hit the speed sensor pole piece during installation.
  2.  
  3. Install speed sensor mounting bolt and tighten to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install speed sensor cable mounting bolts (Upper Arm and Knuckle side) and tighten the fixing bolts 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm)..
  6.  
  7. Install speed sensor cable fixing bolt (Upper side) and tighten the fixing bolt to 87 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    NOTE
    Make sure the cable is not twisted when connecting the speed sensor cable.

  9. Install speed sensor connector.
  10.  

Rear
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the harness connector (1).
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor mounting bolt (2).
  6.  
  7. Remove the speed sensor (3).

  9. Check speed sensor pole piece for presence of foreign materials; remove any dirt, etc.
  10.  
  11. Check the pole piece for damage, and replace speed sensor if necessary.
  12.  
  13. Check speed sensor cable for short or open, and replace with a new one if necessary. To check for cable short or open, bend or stretch the cable while checking for continuity.
  14.  
  15. Check the sensor ring for damage including tooth chipping, and if damaged, replace the axle shaft assembly.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the speed sensor. Tighten the mounting bolt to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm) for 1997-00 models, or to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) for 2001-04 models.
  2.  
  3. Attach the harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.
