Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the axle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Support the axle with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Driveshaft
     
    Wheels
     
    Calipers and pads
     

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Flange nut (discard)
     
    Pinion flange
     
    Pinion seal
     
    Pinion bearing
     
    Collapsible spacer

To install:


NOTE
Use a new collapsible spacer and flange nut for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Collapsible spacer
     
    Pinion bearing
     
    Pinion seal
     
    Pinion flange

  3. Install the new flange nut and tighten to 160 ft. lbs. (217 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Adjust the bearing preload:
    1. Attach an inch lb. torque wrench to the nut and make several rotations. Note the torque needed to start each rotation.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the nut until a starting torque of 5.6-10 inch lbs. for a new bearing, or 2.8-4.9 inch lbs. for a used bearing is recorded. Do not exceed 500 ft. lbs. (678 Nm) tightening torque.

  7. Using a punch, stake the nut at 2 points.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Driveshaft. Torque to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
     
    Brake calipers and pads
     
    Wheels
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
