Lower Control Arm

Control Arm Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Lower control armBushings, press them from the control arm, using Remover/Installer J-36833 for the front bushing and Remover/Installer J-36834 for the rear bushing.

    Lower control arm
     
    Bushings, press them from the control arm, using Remover/Installer J-36833 for the front bushing and Remover/Installer J-36834 for the rear bushing.
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: New bushingsLower control arm

    New bushings
     
    Lower control arm
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower control arm
     
    Bushings, press them from the control arm, using Remover/Installer J-36833 for the front bushing and Remover/Installer J-36834 for the rear bushing.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New bushings
     
    Lower control arm

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

    Front wheel
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Lower control armShock absorberStabilizer bar linkLower ball jointTorsion barFront wheel

    Shock absorber
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Torsion bar
     
    Front wheel

  3. Raise the suspension so that there is 0.79 inches (20mm) between the bump stop and the lower control arm. For 1999-01, tighten the front control arm bolt to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm) and tighten the rear control arm bolt to 145 ft. lbs. (196 Nm). For 2002-03, tighten the rear nut to 174 ft. lbs. (235 Nm); the rear nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm).

  5. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tie rod at the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the halfshaft from the knuckle. See Halfshaft R&I.
  8.  
  9. Support the lower control arm with a jack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cotter pin and castellated nut then, using a screw-type forcing tool, separate the ball joint from the knuckle. Discard the cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Remove the control arm-to-frame nuts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the torsion bar.
  16.  
  17. Remove the torsion bar arm and bracket.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the stabilizer link at the lower arm.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the shock absorber from the arm.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower ball joint from the arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the control arm-to-frame bolts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the arm.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower ball joint in the arm. Torque to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the torsion bar arm bolt.
  4.  
  5. Install the arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the control arm-to-frame bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the ball joint in the knuckle. Torque to 108 ft. lbs. (147 Nm). Use a new cotter pin.
  10.  
  11. Connect the shock absorber at the arm. Torque to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the stabilizer link at the lower arm. Torque to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the torsion bar arm and bracket. Torque to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the torsion bar.
  18.  
  19. Install the control arm nuts finger tight.
  20.  
  21. Set the control arm so that the bump stop clearance is:

    1997-03: 0.87 in. (22 mm)
     
    2004 without Intelligent Suspension: 0.59 in. (15mm)
     
    2004 with intelligent suspension: 0.83 in. (21mm)

  23. Tighten the front nut to 174 ft. lbs. (235 Nm). Tighten the rear nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 Nm).

  25. Adjust the alignment.
