Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Front wheelsUpper shock retaining nut and rubber bushingSuspension bump stopsShock absorber

    Front wheels
     
    Upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing
     
    Suspension bump stops
     
    Shock absorber
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 60-61 ft. lbs. (82-84 Nm) for 2001-02; 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm) for 2003.Bump stop. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).Upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing. Tighten the nut to 14-15 ft. lbs. (19-20 Nm).Front wheels

    Shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 60-61 ft. lbs. (82-84 Nm) for 2001-02; 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm) for 2003.
     
    Bump stop. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing. Tighten the nut to 14-15 ft. lbs. (19-20 Nm).
     
    Front wheels

1997-03 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing
     
    Suspension bump stops
     
    Lower nut
     
    Shock absorber

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber. Tighten the lower bolt to 60-61 ft. lbs. (82-84 Nm) for 2002; 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm) for 2003.
     
    Bump stop. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing. Tighten the nut to 14-15 ft. lbs. (19-20 Nm).
     
    Front wheels

2004 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock retaining nut and rubber bushing.
  8.  
  9. With Intelligent Suspension:
    1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the connector from the bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 screws.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the actuator.
    8.  
    9. Remove the nuts.
    10.  
    11. Remove the bracket.
    12.

  11. Remove the lower bolt/nut.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shock absorber.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the upper shock nut to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm); torque the lower bolt/nut to 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm). Torque the actuator bracket to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
