The front wheel bearings are not adjustable.

Trooper
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Front wheelBrake caliper and padsHub dust capSnapring and shimHub flangeLockscrew and washer

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and pads
     
    Hub dust cap
     
    Snapring and shim
     
    Hub flange
     
    Lockscrew and washer
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the hub nut to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) to seat the bearings and then fully loosen the nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the hub nut to achieve a bearing preload of 2.6-4.0 lbs. (1.2-1.8 Kg) for used bearings. If the bearings were replaced, set the preload to 4.4-5.5 lbs. (2.0-2.5 Kg).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following: Lockwasher and screwHub flangeShim and snapringHub dust cap. Tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).Brake caliper and padsFront wheel

    Hub dust cap. Tighten the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper from the anchor plate and suspend it out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts attaching the hub to the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the hub bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Place the transfer case in 2WD.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the front end.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper from the anchor plate and suspend it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the caulking around the front driveshaft nuts. Remove the nuts and discard them.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 4 hub retaining bolts.
    NOTE
    If the hub is difficult to remove, install 2 long bolt in the bolt holes and strike them to loosen the hub.

  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the hub bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Use new driveshaft nuts, torquing them to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). Apply new caulking. The caulk should be free of cracks when applied.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Raise and support the front end.
  2.  
  3. Remove the caliper from the anchor plate and suspend it out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolts attaching the hub to the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the hub bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Place the transfer case in 2WD.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper from the anchor plate and suspend it out of the way.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rotor.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the caulking around the front driveshaft nuts. Remove the nuts and discard them.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 hub retaining bolts.
  12.  


NOTE
If the hub is difficult to remove, install 2 long bolt in the bolt holes and strike them to loosen the hub.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the hub bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Use new driveshaft nuts, torquing them to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm). Apply new caulking. The caulk should be free of cracks when applied.

  4.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the bearings. Replace if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Apply clean wheel bearing grease to the inner and outer bearings.
  4.  
  5. Apply grease in the hub.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel bearings into the hub along with a new grease seal.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following: Wheel speed sensor ring. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).Brake rotor and hub assemblyHub nut. Set the bearing preload.Lockscrew and washerHub flangeSnapring and shimHub dust capBrake caliper and support. Tighten the support bolts to 115 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).Front wheel

    Wheel speed sensor ring. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor and hub assembly
     
    Hub nut. Set the bearing preload.
     
    Lockscrew and washer
     
    Hub flange
     
    Snapring and shim
     
    Hub dust cap
     
    Brake caliper and support. Tighten the support bolts to 115 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
