Removal & Installation



1997-03 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Support the vehicle under the frame.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Brake hose at the crossmember
     
    Upper link at the axle on the left side
     
    Stabilizer bar at the links
     
    Shock absorbers
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the rear axle with the jack to release the coil spring tension. Remove the coil springs and insulators.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Place the coil springs on the axle assembly and the insulators on top of the springs. Note the position of the paint mark in the accompanying illustration.
  2.  
  3. Raise the axle assembly into position.
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber and just snug the nut. The nut should be tightened to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm) when the weight of the vehicle is on the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Connect the stabilizer bar at the links. Torque to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the upper link. Torque to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake hose. Bleed the brakes.

2004 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Support the vehicle under the frame.
  4.  
  5. Support the rear axle with a jack.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheels
     
    Brake hose at the crossmember
     
    Upper link at the axle on the left side
     
    Stabilizer bar at the links
     
    Shock absorbers
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the rear axle with the jack to release the coil spring tension. Remove the coil springs and insulators.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Place the coil springs on the axle assembly and the insulators on top of the springs. Note the position of the paint mark in the accompanying illustration.
  2.  
  3. Raise the axle assembly into position.
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber and just snug the nut. The nut should be tightened to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm) when the weight of the vehicle is on the suspension.
  6.  
  7. Connect the stabilizer bar at the links. Torque to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the upper link. Torque to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the brake hose. Bleed the brakes.
  12.
