Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Install a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Starter
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Shift selector cable
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines
     
    Torque converter
     
    Transmission mount and bracket
     
    Transmission flange bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine. Tighten the flange bolts to 32-42 ft. lbs. (43-57 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and bracket. Tighten the mount bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm) and the bracket bolts to 16-21 ft. lbs. (22-28 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 32-42 ft. lbs. (43-57 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Shift selector cable
     
    Driveshaft. Tighten the bolts to 55-65 ft. lbs. (75-88 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    MAF meter
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission to the correct level with the proper fluid. Do not over-fill.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Install a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine/transaxle assembly
     
    Transfer case
     
    Transfer case link shaft
     
    Torque converter access cover
     
    Transaxle dust cover
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Transaxle bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Support the torque converter and remove the transaxle from the engine.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
     
    Transfer case. Tighten the bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm). Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Engine/transaxle assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission to the correct level with the proper fluid. Do not over-fill.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Install a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
  4.  
  5. Drain the transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Driveshaft
     
    Shift selector cable
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines
     
    Torque converter
     
    Transmission mount and bracket
     
    Transmission flange bolts
     
    Transmission
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine. Tighten the flange bolts to 32-42 ft. lbs. (43-57 Nm).
     
    Transmission mount and bracket. Tighten the mount bolts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm) and the bracket bolts to 16-21 ft. lbs. (22-28 Nm).
     
    Torque converter. Tighten the bolts to 32-42 ft. lbs. (43-57 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil cooler lines
     
    Transmission electrical connectors
     
    Shift selector cable
     
    Driveshaft. Tighten the bolts to 55-65 ft. lbs. (75-88 Nm).
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Coolant recovery tank
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    MAF meter
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the transmission to the correct level with the proper fluid. Do not over-fill.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

  8.  
  9. Support the torque converter and remove the transaxle from the engine.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the engine. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
