Removal & Installation



4.0L & 4.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Valve cover
     
    Timing chain cover
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Radiator and heater hoses
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the driveplate is visible through the access hole.
  8.  
  9. Install the Crankshaft Setting Peg JD 216 into the CKP sensor location.
  10.  
  11. Install the Camshaft Locking tool JD 215 on the camshafts.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Camshaft sprocket mounting bolt by loosening it
     
    VVT mounting bolt by loosening it
     
    Camshaft Locking tool JD 215
     
    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate
     
    Primary timing chain guide
     
    VVT unit and exhaust camshaft sprocket
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner and guide
     



    Camshafts. Loosen the bearing cap bolts evenly and in several passes.
     
    Valve tappets and shims
     
    Cylinder head

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the cylinder head bolts. They may be reused twice. When reused, each bolt head should be marked with 1 dot from an automatic center punch.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Bolts 1-10: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Bolts 1-10: 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Bolts 1-10: plus 90 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Bolts 1-10: plus 90 degrees.
    8.  
    9. Bolts 11 & 12: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tappets and shims into their original position
     
    Camshaft bearing caps and tighten evenly, in stages, to 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
     

  6.  
  7. Install the Camshaft Locking tool JD 215.
  8.  
  9. Prepare the timing chain tensioners for installation by using a paperclip or other wire to unseat the check valves and compressing the pistons into their bores.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Secondary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    VVT, secondary timing chain and exhaust cam sprocket
     
    Primary timing chain
     
    Primary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate. Tighten the bolts to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain slack, eliminate it by placing a wedge between the primary timing chain tensioner and the guide shoe.
     
    Secondary timing chain by applying counterclockwise force to the exhaust camshaft sprocket.

    Exhaust and intake VVT sprocket bolts. Tighten them to 85-92 ft. lbs. (115-125 Nm).

  13. Remove the tools and wedges.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    CKP sensor
     
    VVT sensor
     
    Exhaust front pipes
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    ECT sensor connector
     
    Radiator and heater hoses
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Timing chain cover
     
    Valve cover
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

A-Bank
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Front cover
     
    Variable Valve Timing (VVT) bushing carrier
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the driveplate is visible through the access hole.
  8.  
  9. Confirm that the timing flat on each camshaft is uppermost. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft one full turn.
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft setting peg JD 216 to the crankshaft position sensor location.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft locking tool JD 215 to the A-Bank camshafts.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate
     
    Primary timing chain
     
    VVT unit, exhaust camshaft sprocket and secondary timing chain
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary timing chain guide
     
    Camshaft locking tool

NOTE
Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the cylinder head bolts. They may be reused twice. When reused, each bolt head should be marked with 1 dot from an automatic center punch.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: M10 bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: M10 bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Step 3: M10 bolts plus 90 degrees.
    6.  
    7. Step 4: M10 bolts plus 90 degrees.
    8.  
    9. Step 5: M8 bolts to 17-20 ft. lbs. (23-27 Nm).
    10.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tappets and shims into their original position
     
    Camshaft bearing caps. Tighten the bolts evenly, in stages, to 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

  7. Install the Camshaft Locking tool JD 215.
  8.  
  9. Prepare the timing chain tensioners for installation by using a paperclip or other wire to unseat the check valves and compressing the pistons into their bores.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Secondary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    VVT, secondary timing chain, and exhaust cam sprocket
     
    Primary timing chain
     
    Primary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate. Tighten the bolts to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain slack, eliminate it by placing a wedge between the primary timing chain tensioner and the guide shoe
     
    Secondary timing chain, tension it by applying counterclockwise force to the exhaust camshaft sprocket
     
    Exhaust and intake VVT sprocket bolts. Tighten them to 85-92 ft. lbs. (115-125 Nm).

  13. Remove the tools and wedges.
  14.  
  15. Install or connect the following:

    CKP sensor
     
    VVT bushing carrier
     
    Front cover
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    ECT sensor connector
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Front cover
     
    Variable Valve Timing (VVT) bushing carrier
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
     

  6.  
  7. Rotate the crankshaft until the triangular arrow indent on the driveplate is visible through the access hole.
  8.  
  9. Confirm that the timing flat on each camshaft is uppermost. If necessary, rotate the crankshaft one full turn.
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft setting peg JD 216 to the crankshaft position sensor location.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft locking tool JD 215 to the A-Bank camshafts.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate
     
    Primary timing chain
     
    VVT unit, exhaust camshaft sprocket and secondary timing chain
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner
     
    Secondary timing chain guide
     
    Camshaft locking tool

  17. Fill the cooling system.

  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  17. Fill the cooling system.

  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.

NOTE
The cylinder head bolts are a torque-to-yield design and must be replaced.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Drain the crankcase and cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Valve covers
     
    Catalytic converter and exhaust crossover tube
     
    Water pump
     
    Front cover
     
    Timing chains
     
    Camshafts and valve tappets
     
    Coolant crossover tube
     
    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Cylinder head bolts in the proper sequence
     
    Cylinder heads

  7. Install the cylinder heads. Tighten the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Plus 90 degrees
    4.  
    5. Step 3: Loosen all bolts one full turn
    6.  
    7. Step 4: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
    8.  
    9. Step 5: Plus 90 degrees
    10.  
    11. Step 6: Plus 90 degrees
    12.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Engine oil dipstick tube
     
    Coolant crossover tube
     
    Camshafts and valve tappets
     
    Timing chains
     
    Front cover
     
    Water pump
     
    Catalytic converter and exhaust crossover tube
     
    Valve covers
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Air cleaner housing
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  

B-Bank
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Valve cover
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Crankshaft damper

    9. Step 5: M8 bolts to 17-20 ft. lbs. (23-27 Nm).

  5. Install or connect the following:

    Tappets and shims into their original position
     
    Camshaft bearing caps. Tighten the bolts evenly, in stages, to 84-96 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

  7. Install the Camshaft Locking tool JD 215.
  8.  
  9. Prepare the timing chain tensioners for installation by using a paperclip or other wire to unseat the check valves and compressing the pistons into their bores.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Secondary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Secondary timing chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    VVT, secondary timing chain, and exhaust cam sprocket
     
    Primary timing chain
     
    Primary timing chain guide. Tighten the bolt to 10-12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain tensioner and backing plate. Tighten the bolts to 89-124 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chain slack, eliminate it by placing a wedge between the primary timing chain tensioner and the guide shoe
     
    Secondary timing chain, tension it by applying counterclockwise force to the exhaust camshaft sprocket
     
    Exhaust and intake VVT sprocket bolts. Tighten them to 85-92 ft. lbs. (115-125 Nm).

  13. Remove the tools and wedges.

  15. Install or connect the following:

    CKP sensor
     
    VVT bushing carrier
     
    Front cover
     
    Crankshaft damper
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Coolant outlet pipe
     
    ECT sensor connector
     
    Heater hoses
     
    Radiator hoses
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Valve cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  16.  
  17. Fill the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Start the engine and check for leaks.
