Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil pan bolts
     
    Oil pan
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New oil pan gasket
     
    Oil pan. Tighten the bolts to 96-120 inch lbs. (11-13 Nm).
     
    Drain plug. Tighten it to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the crankcase.
  4.  
  5. Start the vehicle and check for leaks.
  6.  

  1. Remove the transfer case.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the A/C compressor lower retaining bolts. Loosen the A/C compressor upper retaining bolts, and swing it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower access cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan-to-transmission retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Remove and discard the gasket.
  16.  
  17. Clean and inspect the oil pan and the cylinder block sealing surfaces.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Apply a 10 mm diameter dot of silicone sealant WSE-M4G323-A6, or equivalent, meeting Jaguar specification to the engine front cover to the cylinder block mating joints.
  2.  
  3. Loosely install the oil pan to transmission housing bolts.
    NOTE
    The oil pan retaining bolts numbered 1 and 2 are longer than the retaining bolts numbered 3 through 15.


    NOTE
    Tighten the oil pan bolts within six minutes of applying sealer.

  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  7. Use a new oil pan gasket. Tighten the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the pan-to-transmission bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten the access cover bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the compressor bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Refill the engine with oil.
  16.  
  17. Install the transfer case.
  18.  

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the eighteen bolts which secure the oil pan. Remove the oil pan from the oil pan body.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gasket from the oil pan body assembly.
  8.  
  9. Clean and inspect the sealing faces on the oil pan body assembly.
  10.  
  11. Clean and inspect the new oil pan mating face.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Position the oil pan gasket to the oil pan body assembly.
  2.  
  3. Insert the seal into the locating positions in the groove, working around from a corner.
  4.  
  5. Press in the remainder of the seal, following the same procedure.
  6.  
  7. Position the oil pan to the oil pan body.
  8.  
  9. Install, but do not tighten, the bolts until all are in place.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-13 Nm), in the sequence shown.
    NOTE
    A new oil pan is supplied with the drain plug fitted. Check that the plug is tightened to the correct torque figure of 22-29 ft. lbs. (30-40 Nm).


    NOTE
    When the engine is started from cold and run for a short period only, before being switched off, a quantity of oil will be hung up within the engine because it is not up to operating temperature.

  13. Should the oil level subsequently be topped-up, the level could become too high, causing oil burning. Typically, about a quart (0.875L) is hung up.
  14.  
  15. Lower the car. Refill the engine with the correct specification engine oil.
  16.  

  1. On coupes, raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. On convertibles:
    1. Remove the radiator splash shield.
    2.  
    3. Remove the underbody front cross brace.

  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan from the oil pan body.
  8.  
  9. Remove the gasket from the oil pan body assembly.
  10.  
  11. Make sure all surfaces are clean.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan body assembly.
  2.  
  3. Position the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install, but do not fully tighten the retaining bolts until all bolts are in place. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (12 Nm), in the sequence shown.
    NOTE
    A new oil pan is supplied with the drain plug installed. Check that the drain plug is tightened to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  7. On convertibles, install the underbody front cross brace.
  8.  
  9. Install the radiator splash shield.
  10.  
  11. On coupes, lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Fill the engine with engine oil to the correct level.
  14.  

3.0L Engine
From VIN M45255
  1. Remove the cowl vent screen.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine compartment support.

  5. Detach the right-hand valve cover wiring harness.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the left-hand ignition coils electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Detach the left-hand valve cover wiring harness.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dipstick tube retaining bolt. Reposition the dipstick tube.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the exhaust manifold retaining nut shown.

  15. Install the special tool to the exhaust manifold. Install the retaining bolt. Left-hand shown; right-hand similar.

  17. Install the support bars to the special tool.

  21. Remove the air conditioning compressor.
  22.  
  23. Detach the generator battery positive cable protective cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.
  28.  
  29. Remove the generator.
  30.  
  31. Drain the engine oil.
  32.  
  33. Detach the power steering hose.
  34.  
  35. Remove the steering gear shaft pinch bolt.
  36.  
  37. Detach the steering gear. Secure the steering gear out of the way.
  38.  
  39. Remove the engine mounts lower retaining bolts.
  40.  
  41. Detach the automatic transmission oil cooler tubes retaining bracket.
  42.  
  43. Lower the vehicle.
  44.  
  45. Using the special tools, raise the engine to a suitable height. Raise the vehicle.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove the front subframe retaining bolts. Failure to follow this procedure may result in personal injury.

  47. Loosen the front subframe retaining bolts to enable the oil pan to be removed.

  49. Remove the oil pan rear retaining bolts.
  50.  
  51. Remove the oil pan.
  52.  
  53. Remove and discard the oil pan gasket.
  54.  
  55. Clean and inspect the oil pan and cylinder block sealing surfaces.
  56.  

To install:

  1. Apply a 10 mm dot of silicone gasket and sealant meeting Jaguar specification to the engine block and front cover mating surface.
  2.  
  3. Position the pan on the block.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the oil pan to transmission housing bolts.
    NOTE
    Tighten all oil pan retaining bolts with in six minutes of applying the sealer.

  7. Install the oil pan retaining bolts. Tighten in the sequence shown to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the rear bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

  11. Lower the vehicle.
    NOTE
    Make sure the engine mounts locate into the correct position when the engine is repositioned.

  13. Using the special tools, reposition the engine.
  14.  
  15. Raise the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Attach the automatic transmission oil cooler tubes retaining bracket. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the engine mounts lower retaining bolts. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the steering gear. Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the steering gear shaft pinch bolt. Tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Attach the power steering hose. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install a new sealing washer to oil pan drain plug. Install the oil pan drain plug. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the generator. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Connect the generator electrical connector.
  30.  
  31. Install the battery positive cable retaining nut. Tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Attach the generator battery positive cable protective cover.
  34.  
  35. Install the air conditioning compressor.
  36.  
  37. Remove the special tool.
  38.  
  39. Install the exhaust manifold retaining nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the dipstick tube retaining bolt. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Attach the left-hand valve cover wiring harness.
  44.  
  45. Connect the left-hand ignition coils electrical connectors.
  46.  
  47. Attach the right-hand valve cover wiring harness.
  48.  
  49. Install the engine compartment support. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  50.  
  51. Install the cowl vent screen.
  52.  
  53. Refill the engine with oil.
  54.  

Through VIN M45254
  1. Remove the front axle crossmember.
  2.  
  3. Remove the generator.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Support the air conditioning compressor using tie straps.
  10.  
  11. Detach the air conditioning compressor.
  12.  
  13. Detach the power steering fluid tube mounting bracket.
  14.  
  15. Detach the wiring harness.
  16.  
  17. Detach the transmission fluid cooler tubes mounting bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pan to transmission retaining bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pan.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the gasket.
  24.  
  25. Clean and inspect the oil pan and cylinder block sealing surfaces.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Apply an 8mm dot of silicone gasket, or equivalent, meeting Jaguar specification WSE-M4G323-A6 to the sealing surface on the engine block and engine front cover joint.
    NOTE
    Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts within 6 minutes of applying sealant.

  2.  
  3. Using a new gasket, position the pan on the block.
  4.  
  5. Loosely install the oil pan to cylinder block retaining bolts. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Loosely install the oil pan to transmission retaining bolts. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Attach the transmission fluid cooler tubes mounting bracket. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. 10 Nm.
  10.  
  11. Attach the wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Attach the power steering fluid tube mounting bracket. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Attach the air conditioning compressor. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the air conditioning compressor electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Refill the engine with oil.
  20.  
  21. Install the generator.
  22.  
  23. Install the front axle crossmember.
  24.  

S-Type 4.0L And 4.2L Engine Through VIN M45254; XJ Range, 4.0L And 4.2L Engines
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. With the 4.2L engine, remove the air deflector.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the seventeen retaining bolts. Remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Make sure all surfaces are clean.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan assembly.
  2.  
  3. Insert the seal into the locating positions in the groove, working around from a corner.
  4.  
  5. Press in the remainder of the seal, following the same procedure.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan to the block.
  8.  
  9. Install, but do not fully tighten the retaining bolts. When all bolts are installed, tighten the oil pan bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-13 Nm), in the sequence shown.
  10.  
  11. Install the air deflector.

NOTE
A new oil pan is supplied with the drain plug installed. Check that the drain plug is tightened to the correct torque figure.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

  3. With the 4.2L engine, remove the air deflector.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the seventeen retaining bolts. Remove the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Remove the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Make sure all surfaces are clean.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan assembly.
  2.  
  3. Insert the seal into the locating positions in the groove, working around from a corner.
  4.  
  5. Press in the remainder of the seal, following the same procedure.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan to the block.
  8.  
  9. Install, but do not fully tighten the retaining bolts. When all bolts are installed, tighten the oil pan bolts to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-13 Nm), in the sequence shown.

  11. Install the air deflector.
