Oil Pump

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Front cover
     
    Primary timing chains
     
    Oil pump mounting bolts
     
    Oil pump
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New gasket
     
    Oil pump. Tighten the bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Primary timing chains
     
    Front cover
     
    Crankshaft pulley

4.0L Engine

  1. Remove the left-hand primary timing chain.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four bolts which secure the oil pump to the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove the gasket.
  8.  
  9. Make sure all surfaces are clean.
  10.  
  11. Install the new gasket to the block face.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pump. Make sure that the drive flats on the inside of the pump gear engage correctly with the mating flats on the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the left-hand primary timing chain.
  18.  

  1. Open the driver's door, or both doors if necessary, to allow the side glass to drop. Ensure that the doors remain open until after the battery has been disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hood.
  8.  
  9. Remove the Crankshaft Sprocket B-bank.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four bolts which secure the oil pump to the cylinder block.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump. Remove the gasket.
  14.  
  15. Clean and inspect all components and mating faces.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install a new gasket to the block face.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump onto the front of the crankshaft, to the block face; ensure that the drive flats on the inside of the pump gear engage correctly with the mating flats on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the securing bolts and tighten to 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-13 Nm). Refit both sprockets to the crankshaft, both primary timing chains, the timing cover and all associated
  6.  
  7. components.
  8.  
  9. Refit the hood.
  10.  
  11. Reset the side glass memory.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery.
  14.  

2.5L And 3.0L Engine

  1. Remove the timing drive components.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump tube.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pump.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil pump for damage and wear.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pump flush to the cylinder block for correct sealing.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the inner rotor of the oil pump to align with the flats on the crankshaft before installation.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pump. Tighten all fasteners to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  16.  

4.2L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil strainer.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing chains and drive sprockets.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump. Remove and discard the gasket.
  10.  
  11. Make sure that all mating surfaces are clean.
  12.  

To Install:

  1. Install a new gasket. Install the oil pump. Tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the oil strainer. Install new O-ring seals. Tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the timing components.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan.
  8.
