Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



4.0L & 4.2L Engines
  1. Remove the automatic transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flexplate.
  4.  
  5. Install seal removal tool 303538 to the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the two nuts towards the head of each bolt to allow the bolts to install fully into the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the center bolt until it is below the face of the main tool and position the tool to the rear of the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Lightly tighten the two bolts so that they fully locate in the crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Hold the tool against the crankshaft and lightly and evenly tighten the two nuts to the face of the tool to secure the tool and to hold it parallel to the face of the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Secure the oil seal to the tool using the three self-tapping screws spaced evenly around the face of the tool.
  16.  
  17. Use the punch (provided) and a hammer to pierce the seal face and provide a pilot hole for one of the self-tapping screws provided.
  18.  
  19. Install a self-tapping screw and tighten by 1.5 turns only.

WARNING
DO NOT TIGHTEN BY MORE THAN TWO TURNS OR THE SCREW MAY BREAK.

  1. Repeat the above steps for the other two screws.
  2.  
  3. Hold the two bolts stationary and loosen fully the two nuts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the center bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two bolts to release the tool and seal assembly from the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three self-tapping screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the seal.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew the center bolt until it is below the face of the tool.
  14.  
  15. Make sure all components are clean.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the transit sleeve is correctly in place and install the new seal over the crankshaft.
  2.  


NOTE
Do not use any lubricant on the seal, the transit sleeve or the crankshaft.

  1. Carefully remove the transit sleeve, leaving the seal in place.
  2.  
  3. Install the tool to the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the center bolt is unscrewed to below the face which is to fit to the crankshaft and position the tool to the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Check that the nuts are fully unscrewed and install the two bolts to the crankshaft threads and lightly tighten.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the nuts, finger tight, to hold the tool assembly against the seal. Check that the seal and the tool are approximately parallel to the rear of the engine.
  10.  
  11. Press the seal into the housing.
  12.  
  13. Hold each bolt stationary, in turn, and tighten its nut a small amount (approximately two to three flats) in turn, to press the seal fully into the housing, until the tool is in contact with the cylinder block.
  14.  
  15. Remove the tool from the crankshaft.
  16.  
  17. Check that the seal is located correctly.
  18.  
  19. Install the flexplate.
  20.  
  21. Install the automatic transmission.
  22.  

  1. Remove the automatic transmission.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flexplate.
  4.  
  5. Install seal removal tool 303538 to the crankshaft.

  15. Secure the oil seal to the tool using the three self-tapping screws spaced evenly around the face of the tool.

  17. Use the punch (provided) and a hammer to pierce the seal face and provide a pilot hole for one of the self-tapping screws provided.
  18.  
  19. Install a self-tapping screw and tighten by 1.5 turns only.
    WARNING
    DO NOT TIGHTEN BY MORE THAN TWO TURNS OR THE SCREW MAY BREAK.

  21. Repeat the above steps for the other two screws.

  35. Make sure all components are clean.

To install:

  1. Make sure the transit sleeve is correctly in place and install the new seal over the crankshaft.
    NOTE
    Do not use any lubricant on the seal, the transit sleeve or the crankshaft.

2.5L & 3.0L Engines
  1. Remove the flexplate.
  2.  


NOTE
Avoid scratching or damaging the oil seal sealing surfaces on the crankshaft and cylinder block.

  1. Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft rear main oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Clean and inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal sealing surfaces.
  4.  
  5. Lubricate the crankshaft flange, the crankshaft rear oil bore seal, and the oil seal lip. Use engine assembly lubricant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification ESR-M99C80-A.

NOTE
Alternate bolt tightening to correctly seat the crankshaft rear oil seal until it is flush with the cylinder block.

  1. Using the special tools, install the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Install the flexplate.
  4.  

  1. Remove the flexplate.
    NOTE
    Avoid scratching or damaging the oil seal sealing surfaces on the crankshaft and cylinder block.

  3. Using the special tools, remove the crankshaft rear main oil seal.

  5. Clean and inspect the crankshaft rear oil seal sealing surfaces.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate the crankshaft flange, the crankshaft rear oil bore seal, and the oil seal lip. Use engine assembly lubricant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification ESR-M99C80-A.
    NOTE
    Alternate bolt tightening to correctly seat the crankshaft rear oil seal until it is flush with the cylinder block.

  9. Using the special tools, install the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  10.  
  11. Install the flexplate.
