Removal & Installation



Right Bank-4.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Throttle body
     
    Crankcase ventilation hose
     
    Wiring harness from the valve cover
     
    Engine wiring harness
     
    Fourteen valve cover retaining screws. The screws remain in place, held in by the seals
     
    Valve cover, screws and seals as an assembly
     
    Retaining screws from the valve cover
     
    Rubber sealing ring from each screw
     
    Discard the outer seal
     
    Discard the four seals from around the spark plug apertures
     
    Seal for the VVT solenoid
     

  4.  
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to specification. Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations.
  6.  
  7. Apply RTV sealant WSS-M4G320-A3 to two places on the joint between the front of the valve cover and the cylinder head. The application of sealant must be 3mm diameter by 12mm long. Install the valve cover immediately after applying the sealant. The cover should be fitted directly to the head without smearing the sealant or the seals.
  8.  

Left Bank-4.0L Engines

NOTE
Make a note of the different types of fixings and their positions in the valve cover.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Power assisted steering reservoir
     
    Oil deposit tube
     
    Engine wiring harness
     
    Oil filler cap
     
    Fourteen valve cover retaining screws. The screws remain in place, held in by the seals
     
    Valve cover, screws and seals as an assembly
     
    Retaining screws from the valve cover
     
    Rubber sealing ring from each screw
     
    Discard the outer seal
     
    Discard the four seals from around the spark plug apertures
     
    Seal for the VVT solenoid
     

  4.  
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to specification. Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations.
  6.  
  7. Apply RTV sealant WSS-M4G320-A3 to two places on the joint between the front of the valve cover and the cylinder head. The application of sealant must be 3mm diameter by 12mm long. Install the valve cover immediately after applying the sealant. The cover should be fitted directly to the head without smearing the sealant or the seals.
  8.  

Right Bank-2.5L & 3.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake manifold
     
    EGR valve tube
     
    Engine breather tube
     
    Wiring harness
     
    Wiring harness/bracket from the valve cover and retaining nuts
     
    Ignition coils
     
    wiring harness from the valve cover
     
    Valve cover and discard gaskets
     

  4.  
  5. To install, apply a 5mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant on the valve cover caps and apply an 8mm diameter on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join. Use new valve cover gaskets.
  6.  
  7. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure. Tighten valve cover bolts in sequence to: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to tightening sequence illustrations under Valve Lash.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Right-hand on-plug coils
     
    Right-hand valve cover wiring harness
     
    Intake manifold rear retaining bracket
     
    Engine wiring harness retaining bracket
     
    Valve cover
     

  4.  
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations.
  6.  
  7. Apply a 5mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification on the half round gaskets and apply an 8mm diameter on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join.
  8.  

Left Bank-2.5L & 3.0L Engines

NOTE
When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Engine breather tube
     
    Throttle body wiring harness
     
    Wiring harness from the valve cover
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Wiring harness from the valve cover
     
    Cylinder head temperature sensor
     
    Valve cover and discard gaskets
     

  4.  
  5. To install, apply a 5mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant on the valve cover caps and apply an 8mm diameter on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join. Use new valve cover gaskets.
  6.  
  7. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure. Tighten valve cover bolts in sequence to: 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to tightening sequence illustrations under Valve Lash.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect or remove the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Left-hand on-plug coils
     
    Left-hand valve cover wiring harness
     
    Engine breather tube
     
    Engine wiring harness retaining bracket
     
    Valve cover
     

  4.  
  5. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations.
  6.  
  7. Apply a 5mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification on the half round gaskets and apply an 8mm diameter on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join.
  8.  

Left Bank-4.0L & 4.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air cleaner
     
    For vehicles with VIN Range: M45255-N52047, detach the power steering fluid reservoir
     
    Ignition coil-on-plug cover
     
    Oil level indicator and tube. Remove and discard the O-ring seal
     

  4.  
  5. For vehicles without supercharger, remove or disconnect the following:

    Left-hand engine cover bracket
     
    Variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil control solenoid electrical connector
     
    Engine wiring harness
     

  6.  
  7. For all vehicles, remove or disconnect the following:

    Left-hand engine wiring harness
     
    Fuel line retaining clip
     
    Fuel line
     
    Ignition coil-on-plug electrical connectors
     
    Ignition coil on-plugs
     
    Valve cover assembly. Remove and discard valve cover gaskets
     
    Valve cover retaining bolts. Remove and discard the valve cover retaining bolt O-ring seals
     

  8.  
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations. Install the valve cover retaining bolts and new valve cover retaining bolt O-ring seals.
  10.  
  11. Apply bead of silicone gasket sealant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join.
  12.  
  13. The application of sealant must be 3mm diameter by 12mm long. Install the valve cover immediately after applying the sealant. The cover should be fitted directly to the head without smearing the sealant or the seals.
  14.  

Right Bank-4.0L & 4.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Ignition coil-on-plug cover
     

  4.  
  5. For vehicles without supercharger, remove or disconnect the following:

    Left-hand engine cover bracket
     
    Variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil control solenoid electrical connector
     
    Engine wiring harness
     

  6.  
  7. For all vehicles, remove or disconnect the following:

    Positive crank ventilation (PCV) pipe
     
    Right-hand engine wiring harness
     
    Ignition coil-on-plugs and retaining bolts
     
    Valve cover assembly. Remove and discard valve cover gaskets
     
    Valve cover retaining bolts. Remove and discard the valve cover retaining bolt O-ring seals
     

  8.  
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts in sequence to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Refer to Camshaft removal and installation procedure for tightening sequence illustrations. Install the valve cover retaining bolts and new valve cover retaining bolt O-ring seals.
  10.  
  11. Apply bead of silicone gasket sealant or equivalent meeting Jaguar specification on the two places where the cylinder head and front cover join.
  12.  
  13. The application of sealant must be 3mm diameter by 12mm long. Install the valve cover immediately after applying the sealant. The cover should be fitted directly to the head without smearing the sealant or the seals.
