Valve Lash (Clearance) Adjustment

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Measure the valve clearance while the camshaft lobe is pointed away from the valve shim. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary for each valve to be measured.

  7. Valve clearance should be 0.012-0.014 inches.

  9. If adjustment is necessary, compress the valves with the special tools and remove the shim with compressed air as shown. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Valve covers
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Negative battery cable

V8 Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine appearance covers
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Measure the valve clearance while the camshaft lobe is pointed away from the valve shim. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary for each valve to be measured.
  6.  
  7. Valve clearance should be 0.012-0.014 inch.
  8.  
  9. If adjustment is necessary, compress the valves with the special tools and remove the shim with compressed air as shown. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Valve covers
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Negative battery cable

4.0L & 4.2L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine appearance covers
     
    Ignition coils
     
    Valve covers
     

  4.  
  5. Measure the valve clearance while the camshaft lobe is pointed away from the valve shim. Rotate the crankshaft as necessary for each valve to be measured.

2.5L & 3.0L Engines



  1. Remove the left hand valve cover.
    1. Remove the ignition coils.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air filter intake pipe.
    4.  
    5. Detach the wiring harness.
    6.  
    7. Remove the air filter retaining bracket.
    8.  
    9. Detach the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
    12.  
    13. Detach the coolant hose.
    14.  
    15. Remove the valve cover.
    16.  
    17. Remove and discard the valve cover gaskets.
    18.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand valve cover.
    1. Remove the ignition coils.
    2.  
    3. Detach the wiring harness.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the engine cover retaining bracket.
    8.  
    9. Remove the intake manifold support bracket.
    10.  
    11. Remove the valve cover.
    12.  
    13. Remove and discard the valve cover gaskets.
      WARNING
      Rotating the crankshaft in a counterclockwise direction may cause engine damage. Crankshaft journals are directionally machined. Rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise can raise burrs on bearing surfaces, reducing engine life.


      NOTE
      Camshaft lobes must be 180 degrees away from each valve shim or valve clearance measurement will be incorrect.

  5. Rotate the engine clockwise to position the camshaft lobe away from the shim surface.
  6.  
  7. Using a feeler gauge set, measure the clearance between the camshaft and the shim surface. Record and check the readings.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the clearances as necessary.
    1. Remove the camshafts.
    2.  
    3. Use compressed air to remove the shims that require replacing. Blow compressed air between the shim edge and bucket to dislodge the shim.
    4.  
    5. Use the following formula to calculate the required shim thickness. Original shim thickness + measured clearance - desired clearance = required shim thickness.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the replacement shim(s) and install.
    8.  
    9. Install the camshafts.
    10.

  11. Apply a 5 mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant WSE-M4G323-A6, or equivalent, meeting Jaguar specification on the half round gaskets and apply an 8 mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant on the two places where the cylinder head and front timing cover join.
  12.  
  13. Make sure that the valve cover isolator mounts are correctly installed to the new valve cover gaskets.

  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new valve cover gaskets. Install the valve cover. Torque the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

V6 Engine



  1. Remove the left hand valve cover.
    1. Remove the ignition coils.
    2.  
    3. Remove the air filter intake pipe.
    4.  
    5. Detach the wiring harness.
    6.  
    7. Remove the air filter retaining bracket.
    8.  
    9. Detach the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
    10.  
    11. Disconnect the variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
    12.  
    13. Detach the coolant hose.
    14.  
    15. Remove the valve cover.
    16.  
    17. Remove and discard the valve cover gaskets.
    18.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand valve cover.
    1. Remove the ignition coils.
    2.  
    3. Detach the wiring harness.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the variable camshaft timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the engine cover retaining bracket.
    8.  
    9. Remove the intake manifold support bracket.
    10.  
    11. Remove the valve cover.
    12.  
    13. Remove and discard the valve cover gaskets.
    14.

WARNING
Rotating the crankshaft in a counterclockwise direction may cause engine damage. Crankshaft journals are directionally machined. Rotating the crankshaft counterclockwise can raise burrs on bearing surfaces, reducing engine life.


NOTE
Camshaft lobes must be 180 degrees away from each valve shim or valve clearance measurement will be incorrect.

  1. Rotate the engine clockwise to position the camshaft lobe away from the shim surface.
  2.  
  3. Using a feeler gauge set, measure the clearance between the camshaft and the shim surface. Record and check the readings.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the clearances as necessary.
    1. Remove the camshafts.
    2.  
    3. Use compressed air to remove the shims that require replacing. Blow compressed air between the shim edge and bucket to dislodge the shim.
    4.  
    5. Use the following formula to calculate the required shim thickness. Original shim thickness + measured clearance - desired clearance = required shim thickness.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the replacement shim(s) and install.
    8.  
    9. Install the camshafts.
    10.

  7. Apply a 5 mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant WSE-M4G323-A6, or equivalent, meeting Jaguar specification on the half round gaskets and apply an 8 mm diameter bead of silicone gasket sealant on the two places where the cylinder head and front timing cover join.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that the valve cover isolator mounts are correctly installed to the new valve cover gaskets.
  10.  
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new valve cover gaskets. Install the valve cover. Torque the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
