Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove and discard the brake caliper lower retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Pivot the brake caliper upwards.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake pads.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
If the piston is pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced into the fluid reservoir.


NOTE
Make sure that the brake disc faces are clean before installation.

  1. Push the piston into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake pads.
  4.  
  5. Pivot the brake caliper downwards.
  6.  
  7. Install a new brake caliper lower retaining bolt. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel.
  10.  

  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove and discard the brake caliper lower retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Pivot the brake caliper upwards.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake pads.
  8.  

To install:


NOTE
If the piston is pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced into the fluid reservoir.


NOTE
Make sure that the brake disc faces are clean before installation.

  1. Push the piston into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake pads.
  4.  
  5. Pivot the brake caliper downwards.
  6.  
  7. Install a new brake caliper lower retaining bolt. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel.
  10.  

From VIN M45255 With Brembo Brakes

Remove both front wheels and tires. Remove the brake pad retaining pins. Remove the brake pad anti-rattle spring plate. Remove the brake pads.


NOTE
If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir. Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation. Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Using a suitable tool, fully retract the brake caliper pistons.

  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake pad retaining pins.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake pad anti-rattle spring plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake pads.
    NOTE
    If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir.

  8.  
  9. Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
  10.  
  11. Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets.
  12.  
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Using a suitable tool, fully retract the brake caliper pistons.
  16.  

XJ Range 2001-03 Through VIN F59525 Without Brembo Brakes Xk Range Without Brembo Brakes
  1. Raise front of vehicle and support on stands.
  2.  
  3. Loosen brake fluid reservoir-cap. Position a cloth around the reservoir to collect any fluid spillage.
  4.  


NOTE
Do not allow the caliper housing to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose.

  1. Remove anti-rattle spring.
  2.  
  3. Remove dust covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove guide pins.
  6.  
  7. Remove and tie caliper housing aside.
  8.  


NOTE
The inner brake pad is fitted with a clip which secures the pad into the caliper piston.

  1. Remove brake pads from caliper housing. Discard brake pads.
  2.  
  3. Clean all mating surfaces.
  4.

NOTE
Retracting the caliper piston may cause the fluid reservoir to over-flow.

  1. Slowly retract piston into caliper housing.
  2.  
  3. Remove paper backing from pads to reveal adhesive shim.
  4.  
  5. Install brake pads, insert clip located on back of inner pad into caliper piston.
  6.  
  7. Install caliper housing to caliper carrier.
  8.  
  9. Install and tighten guide pins to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install dust covers.
  12.  
  13. Install anti-rattle spring.
  14.  
  15. Install wheels.
  16.  
  17. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Check brake fluid level is at the maximum mark.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and repeatedly press the brake pedal until brake pressure is evident.
  22.  

From VIN G00442 Without Brembo Brakes
  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  2.  
  3. Detach the anti-lock brake (ABS) sensor wiring harness from the retaining clips.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the brake caliper lower retaining bolt.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the brake caliper upwards.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake pads.
  10.  


NOTE
If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir.

  1. Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
  2.  


CAUTION
Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable tool, fully retract the brake caliper pistons.
  4.  
  5. Install a new brake caliper lower retaining bolt. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  6.  

With Brembo Brakes

NOTE
The Brembo caliper is aligned to the brake disc when it is first installed to the vehicle, therefore, care must be taken not to disturb this alignment.


WARNING
When removing the caliper; remove the bolts that secure the anchor bracket to the vertical link only. DO NOT loosen any other caliper bolts.

  1. Remove R-clips. Remove pins from caliper.
  2.  
  3. Remove anti-rattle spring.
  4.  
  5. Discard brake pads.
  6.  
  7. Clean all mating surfaces.
  8.  
  9. Note condition of pins and R-clips and replace if necessary.

To install

  1. Install brake pads into caliper.
  2.  
  3. Slowly retract caliper pistons into caliper.

  7. Position anti-rattle spring.
  8.  
  9. Install pins.
  10.  
  11. Install R-clips.
  12.  
  13. Install wheels.
  14.  
  15. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Check brake fluid level is at the maximum mark.
  18.  
  19. Install cap.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and repeatedly press the brake pedal until brake pressure is evident.
  22.  

VIN G45704-G99999 Without Brembo Brakes
  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove the anti-rattle spring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolt dust covers.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolts.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  8.  
  9. Detach the brake caliper.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  10.  
  11. Remove the brake pad.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pad from the caliper piston.
  14.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not use compressed air to disperse brake dust into the atmosphere.


NOTE
If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir.

  1. Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
  2.  
  3. Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets.
    NOTE
    Make sure that the inboard brake pad is correctly installed to the caliper piston.

  4.  
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Using a suitable tool, fully retract the brake caliper pistons. Tighten to 28 Nm.
  6.  

VIN G45704-G99999 With Brembo Brakes
  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  2.  
  3. Remove the anti-rattle spring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolt dust covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolts.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  8.  
  9. Detach the brake caliper.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  10.  
  11. Remove the brake pad from the caliper piston.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pad.
  14.  

To install:


WARNING
Do not use compressed air to disperse brake dust into the atmosphere.


CAUTION
If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir.


CAUTION
Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.


CAUTION
Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets.


NOTE
Make sure that the inboard brake pad is correctly installed to the caliper piston.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Using a suitable tool, fully retract the brake caliper pistons. Tighten to 58 Nm.
  2.  

VIN G00442-G45703 Without Brembo Brakes
  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  2.  
  3. Detach the anti-lock brake (ABS) sensor wiring harness from the retaining clips.
  4.  
  5. Remove and discard the brake caliper lower retaining bolt.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the brake caliper upwards.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake pads.
    NOTE
    If the pistons are pushed back into the housing, brake fluid will be forced back into the brake fluid reservoir.

  10.  
  11. Make sure the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
    CAUTION
    Brake pads must always be replaced in axle sets.

2002 XJ Range, 2003-06 XJ VIN G00442-G45703 And Xk Range With Brembo Brakes

NOTE
The Brembo caliper is aligned to the brake disc when it is first installed to the vehicle, therefore, care must be taken not to disturb this alignment.


WARNING
When removing the caliper; remove the bolts that secure the anchor bracket to the vertical link only. DO NOT loosen any other caliper bolts.

  1. Remove R-clips. Remove pins from caliper.
  2.  
  3. Remove anti-rattle spring.
  4.  
  5. Discard brake pads.
  6.  
  7. Clean all mating surfaces.
  8.  
  9. Note condition of pins and R-clips and replace if necessary.

To install

  5. Install pads, making sure that arrow faces the direction of rotation.
  6.  
  7. Position anti-rattle spring.
  8.  
  9. Install pins.
  10.  
  11. Install R-clips.
  12.  
  13. Install wheels.
  14.  
  15. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Check brake fluid level is at the maximum mark.
  18.  
  19. Install cap.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and repeatedly press the brake pedal until brake pressure is evident.
  22.  

XJ 2002-03 Through VIN F59525 Without Brembo Brakes And 2002-06 Xk Without Brembo Brakes
  1. Raise front of vehicle and support on stands.
  2.

  9. Remove the brake pads.

  11. Make sure that the brake disc faces are clean before installation.
  12.  
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new brake caliper lower retaining bolt. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

  1. Remove both front wheels and tires.

  4.  
  5. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolt dust covers.

    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  8.  
  9. Detach the brake caliper.
    CAUTION
    Do not allow the brake caliper to hang on the hydraulic hose, as this will damage the hose. Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the hose.

  10.  
  11. Remove the brake pad from the caliper piston.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake pad.
  14.  

To install:
