Removal & Installation




NOTE
The front coil spring on S-Type, X-Type and XK Range is removed with the shock absorber. See Front Strut Disassembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheel(s).
  4.  
  5. Install the Special Tool 204-111 in road spring.
  6.  
  7. Slacken the tool adjuster to suit spring length.
  8.  
  9. Install the adaptor and thrust collar.
  10.  
  11. Position the stem of tool in center of spring passing dowel through slot in suspension turret.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the stem of to position dowel across slot.
  14.  


NOTE
When the turning the tool adjuster, ensure tool stem does not rotate and change dowel position.

  1. Rotate the adjuster of Special Tool to tension spring.
  2.  
  3. Remove spring pan to lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Rotate adjuster of Special Tool to release tension from spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove spring assembly and special tool.
  8.

To install:

  1. Install spring pan, new spring and new spring rubber upper and lower seats on tool 204-111.
  2.  
  3. Position spring assembly and tool in suspension turret.
  4.  
  5. Ensure spring upper rubber seat is correctly positioned and fully seated.
  6.  
  7. Engage tool dowel in turret slot.
  8.  
  9. Position spring pan on lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Rotate adjuster of tool to lightly tension spring.
  12.  
  13. Align spring pan with lower control arm bolt locations.
  14.  
  15. Install suitable guide pins in spring pan/control arm bolt locations.
  16.  


NOTE
When the turning the tool adjuster, ensure tool stem does not rotate and change dowel position.

  1. Install spring pan to control arm securing bolts.
  2.  
  3. Rotate tool adjuster to gradually increase spring tension.
  4.  
  5. Progressively substitute spring pan securing bolts for guide pins.
  6.  
  7. Tighten spring pan securing bolts to 52-66 (70-90 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove Special Tool 204-111 from suspension.
  10.  
  11. Ensure spring lower rubber seat is correctly positioned and fully seated.
  12.  
  13. Rotate adjuster of Special Tool to release tension on spring.
  14.  
  15. Rotate tool stem to release dowel from turret and withdraw tool assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install front wheel(s).
  18.  


NOTE

  18.  
  19. Rotate adjuster of Special Tool to release tension from spring.
  20.  
  21. Remove spring assembly and special tool.

To install:

  1. Install spring pan, new spring and new spring rubber upper and lower seats on tool 204-111.

  3. Position spring assembly and tool in suspension turret.

  9. Position spring pan on lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Rotate adjuster of tool to lightly tension spring.

  13. Align spring pan with lower control arm bolt locations.
  14.  
  15. Install suitable guide pins in spring pan/control arm bolt locations.

  17. Install spring pan to control arm securing bolts.
  18.  
  19. Rotate tool adjuster to gradually increase spring tension.

  23. Tighten spring pan securing bolts to 52-66 (70-90 Nm).

  25. Remove Special Tool 204-111 from suspension.
  26.  
  27. Ensure spring lower rubber seat is correctly positioned and fully seated.
  28.  
  29. Rotate adjuster of Special Tool to release tension on spring.
  30.  
  31. Rotate tool stem to release dowel from turret and withdraw tool assembly.
  32.  
  33. Install front wheel(s).
  34.
