Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the left-hand front wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator splash shield.
  4.  
  5. Detach and reposition the water control valve and mounting bracket.
  6.  
  7. Detach and reposition the air conditioning pipe.
  8.  
  9. Remove the stabilizer bar retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Detach the stabilizer bar from the link arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  14.  
  15. To install reverse removal procedure. Tighten stabilizer bar fixtures to: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

CAUTION
Replacement of nuts and bolts: Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

  1. Position vehicle on a four-post lift.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove both engine covers.
  6.  
  7. Position special tool 303-201 in RH and LH fender channels and tighten beam fixings. Engage hooks into engine front lifting eyes. Tighten hook adjustment nuts until weight of engine is supported.
  8.  
  9. Raise vehicle on a four-post ramp.
  10.  
  11. Remove generator front cooling duct and bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove splashield and eight scrivets and screws. Discard scrivets.
  14.  
  15. Remove cruciform strut (convertible vehicles only).
  16.  
  17. Remove front wheels.
  18.  
  19. Release both front wheel-arch liners to access stabilizer-bar brackets.
  20.  
  21. Using a suitable jack, support the weight of the front crossbeam.
  22.  
  23. Remove crossbeam front mounting-brackets.
  24.  
  25. Remove both front engine mountings from crossbeam.
  26.  
  27. Remove both front shock-absorbers from lower mountings.
  28.  
  29. Remove both links from front stabilizer bar.
  30.  
  31. Remove front crossbeam, rear-mountings from vehicle's body.
  32.  
  33. Lower crossbeam sufficiently, to access stabilizer bar mounting-brackets.
  34.  
  35. Remove stabilizer bar mounting-brackets and bushings.
  36.  
  37. Remove stabilizer bar from vehicle.
  38.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten the following to specification:

    Stabilizer bar mounting-brackets: 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Crossbeam rear mountings bolt: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     
    Links to stabilizer bar: 60 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Shock absorbers to lower mountings: 60 ft. lbs. (80 Nm)
     
    Front mounting-brackets to crossbeam: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)
     
    Cruciform strut (convertible models only): 68 ft. lbs. (92 Nm)

  1. Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position. Centralize the steering and lock it in position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column lower retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front subframe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Install new stabilizer bar bushings when replacing the stabilizer bar. Tighten to : 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm). Tighten the steering column lower retaining bolt to: 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).

  11. Carry out front subframe alignment.
  12.  

4.2L Engines
  1. Support radiator.
  2.  
  3. Vehicles without supercharger, remove the throttle body.
  4.  
  5. Vehicles with supercharger, remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
  6.  
  7. All vehicles, install the special tools 303-749.
  8.  
  9. Install the special tool 303-021 to 303-749.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air deflector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the radiator splash shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove both the front wheels and tires.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stabilizer bar link retaining nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  20.  
  21. Detach the steering gear. Secure the steering gear.
  22.  
  23. Loosen the front lower arm retaining nut and bolt.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the rear lower arm retaining nut and bolt.
  26.  
  27. Detach the shock absorber and spring assembly.
  28.  
  29. Detach the engine mount.
  30.  
  31. Install the special tool HTJ 1200-2.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front subframe front retaining bolt.
  34.  
  35. Remove the front subframe rear retaining bolt.
  36.  
  37. Lower the special tool by approximately 200 mm (7.9 in).
  38.  
  39. Remove the stabilizer bar clamp.
  40.  
  41. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  42.  
  43. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  44.  

2.5L And 3.0L Engines
  1. For XJ Series, perform the following:

    Remove the cowl vent screen.
     
    Remove the cabin air filter.
     
    Remove the cabin air filter housing.
     
    Remove the right-hand engine compartment panel.
     
    Remove the left-hand engine compartment access panel.

  3. On all vehicles, reposition the dipstick tube.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the exhaust manifold retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Install the special tool 303-661 to the exhaust manifold and Install the retaining bolt
  8.  
  9. Install the special tool 303-661 support bars to the special tool.
  10.  
  11. Install special tool 303-021 to special tool 303-661.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radiator splash shield.
  16.  
  17. Remove both the front wheel and tires.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer bar link retaining nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove the stabilizer bar link.
  22.  
  23. Detach the steering gear.
  24.  
  25. On XJ Series, detach the headlamp leveling sensor retaining clip. Disconnect the headlamp leveling sensor electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Loosen the front lower arm retaining nut and bolt.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the rear lower arm retaining nut and bolt.
  30.  
  31. Detach the shock absorber and spring assembly.
  32.  
  33. Detach the engine mount.
  34.  
  35. Install the special tool HTJ 1200-2
  36.  
  37. Remove the front subframe front retaining bolt.
  38.  
  39. Remove the front subframe rear retaining bolt.
  40.  
  41. Lower the special tool by approximately 200 mm (7.9 in).
  42.  
  43. Remove the stabilizer bar clamp.
  44.  
  45. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  46.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten the following to specification:

    Stabilizer bar clamp: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Front subframe rear retaining bolt: 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm)
     
    Front subframe front retaining bolt: 146 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
     
    Engine mount bolt: 46 ft. lbs (63 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar link: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
