Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel and tire
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Support wheel knuckle
     
    Upper arm
     
    Shock absorber and spring cover plate
     
    Shock lower bolt
     
    Electrical connector
     
    Shock absorber and spring upper bolts
     
    Shock absorber and spring

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber and spring upper bolts: Tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Electrical connector
     
    Shock absorber and spring cover plate
     
    Upper arm: Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber lower bolt: Tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link: Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Wheel and tire: Tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the wheel hub nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Top inner spring retaining stud is marked for orientation reference.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel and tire
     
    Stabilizer bar link
     
    Brake caliper and anchor plate and suspend aside
     
    Subframe reinforcement plate
     
    Loosen subframe mounting bolts and lower subframe
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Wheel knuckle
     
    Wheel hub nut
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Support spring and shock
     



    Strut and spring assembly
     
    Wheel knuckle pinch bolt
     
    Wheel knuckle

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Make sure orientation arrow on the strut top rubber mount faces from front to rear of the vehicle. Also make sure the stud with the paint spot on the strut top mount is located in the inner most fixing.



    Wheel knuckle: Tighten to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
     



    Strut and spring upper nuts: Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint: Tighten to 63 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
     
    Front subframe: Tighten bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
     
    Subframe reinforcing plate: Tighten bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and anchor plate: Tighten to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer link bar: Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Loosely install new wheel hub nut.
     
    Wheel and tire
     
    Tighten wheel hub nut to 244 ft. lbs. (330 Nm).
     
    Wheel and tire: Tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
     
    Negative battery cable

NOTE
Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

  1. Raise front of vehicle and support on stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove front wheel.
    NOTE
    The suspension must remain supported by the jack throughout this operation, to prevent damage to the upper and lower ball-joints.

  4.  
  5. Place a jack under the lower control arm, raise the jack until the weight of the suspension is supported.
  6.  
  7. Remove shock absorber upper-mounting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Vehicles fitted with adaptive damping: disconnect connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove nut securing shock absorber to lower mounting, DO NOT remove bolt at this stage.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the jack supporting the suspension, while guiding the shock absorber, upper mounting studs through the body.
  14.  
  15. Stop lowering the jack when the studs have passed through the body.
    NOTE
    For installation reference, note position of washers and shims before removing fulcrum shaft.

  16.  
  17. Remove nut. Remove fulcrum shaft. Collect washers and shims. Release upper control arm from crossbeam.
    NOTE
    Do not stretch the brake hose when removing shock absorber and spring assembly.

  18.  
  19. With assistance, remove shock absorber and spring assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove bolt from shock absorber lower mounting.
  22.  
  23. Remove shock absorber and spring assembly from vehicle.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Reposition upper control arm.
  2.  
  3. Align upper control arm to crossbeam.
  4.  
  5. Temporarily fit fulcrum shaft.
  6.  
  7. Clean relevant parts.

  9. Install jaw protectors to vice.
  10.  
  11. Secure assembly in the vice by clamping across two of the upper mounting studs.
  12.  
  13. Align the lower bush bore so that it is parallel with two of the upper mounting studs.
  14.  
  15. Remove assembly from vice.
  16.  
  17. Release upper control arm to provide access for the fitting of the shock absorber and spring assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove fulcrum shaft.
  20.  
  21. Release upper control arm.
    NOTE
    Do not stretch brake-hose when fitting shock absorber and spring assembly.

  22.  
  23. With assistance, fit shock absorber and spring assembly.
  24.  
  25. Position shock absorber to lower mounting.
  26.  
  27. Install bolt to lower mounting, DO NOT fit nut at this stage.
  28.  
  29. Install upper control arm.
  30.  
  31. Position control arm to crossbeam.
  32.  
  33. Install fulcrum shaft; washers and shims in the positions noted in removal.
  34.  
  35. Install and tighten nut to 98 ft. lbs. (132 Nm).
    NOTE
    Make sure the adaptive damping electrical connector is correctly aligned. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the electrical connector.

  36.  
  37. Install shock absorber and spring assembly upper-mounting to body.
  38.  
  39. Raise suspension carefully on jack, and guide upper mounting studs into body stud-holes.
  40.  
  41. Install and tighten nuts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  42.  
  43. Vehicles fitted with adaptive damping, connect connector.
  44.  
  45. Install nut to shock absorber lower mounting.
  46.  
  47. Install and tighten nut to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  48.  
  49. Lower and remove jack supporting suspension.
  50.  
  51. Install wheel.
  52.  
  53. Remove stands and lower vehicle.
  54.  

Overhaul (Coil Spring Removal & Installation)



Front and rear strut disassembly is the same for each model.


NOTE
Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

  1. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly.
    CAUTION
    Make sure the shock absorber is secured by fully inserting the locking pin in to the special tool. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  3. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly to the special tool as shown.
    CAUTION
    As the spring is under extreme tension care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.


    NOTE
    The shock absorber assembly has a unique upper isolator orientation requirement to minimize the side-load effects of the spring on the damper. Therefore make a note of this orientation before disassembling the shock absorber.

  4.  
  5. Clamp the road spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Release the road spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber.
  12.  

To assemble


NOTE
Make sure the spring ends locate correctly against the spring seats.

  1. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly to the special tool.
  2.  
  3. Clamp the road spring.
  4.  
  5. Vehicles without adaptive damping, install a new retaining nut. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Vehicles with adaptive damping, install a new retaining nut. Tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Release the road spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly from the special tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly.
  14.

  1. Remove the strut and spring assembly.
    CAUTION
    As the spring is under extreme tension care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  3. Using a spring compressor, compress the spring.

  5. Loosen the thrust bearing retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the strut and spring assembly:
    1. Remove the spacer.
    2.  
    3. Remove the top mount.
    4.  
    5. Remove the thrust bearing.
    6.  
    7. Remove the spring seat.
    8.  
    9. Remove the spring.
    10.  
    11. Remove the boot.
    12.  
    13. Remove the bump stop.
      NOTE
      Make sure the spring locates correctly against the spring seats.

  9. To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure. Tighten the nut to 47 Nm.
  10.  


NOTE

  1. Remove the front shock absorber and spring assembly.
    CAUTION
    Make sure the shock absorber is secured by fully inserting the locking pin in to the special tool. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  3. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly to the special tool as shown.
    CAUTION
    As the spring is under extreme tension care must be taken at all times. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  4.  
  5. Clamp the road spring.
  6.  
  7. Rotate the handle until spring pressure is released.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the retaining nut.
  12.  
  13. Release the road spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock absorber.
  16.  
  17. Disengage the boot from the upper mounting.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring assister from the boot.
  20.  
  21. Clean the relevant parts.
  22.  

To install:

  1. To ease fitting apply a suitable lubricant to the spring assister and boot.
  2.  
  3. Make sure the boot assembly is seated securely and squarely into the upper mounting.

  5. Insert the spring assister fully into the boot.
  6.  
  7. Insert the boot into upper mounting location.
  8.  
  9. Make sure circlip on the shock absorber abuts with the lower spring pan.
  10.  
  11. Make sure the spring ends butt correctly against the spring seats.
  12.  
  13. Install the shock absorber and spring assembly to the special tool.
  14.  
  15. Clamp the road spring.
  16.  
  17. Vehicles without adaptive damping. Install a new retaining nut. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Vehicles with adaptive damping. Install a new retaining nut. Tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Release the road spring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly from the special tool.
  24.  
  25. Install the front shock absorber and spring assembly.
  26.
