    Removal & Installation

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Rear wheel
       
      Brake caliper
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Hub carrier pivot bolt
       
      Hub retaining nut
       

    4.  
    5. Press the stub shaft out of the hub and remove the halfshaft.
    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      4 axle shaft-to-differential output shaft bolts. Tighten the bolts 60-73 ft. lbs. (81-99 Nm).
       
      Halfshaft in the wheel hub by applying Loctite® 270 thread locking compound to the splines
       
      Hub carrier pivot bolt by aligning the bolt head matchmarks. Tighten it to 66-81 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
       
      Hub retaining nut. Use a new nut and tighten it to 224-248 ft. lbs. (304-337 Nm).
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Brake caliper
       
      Rear wheel
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  
    3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
      NOTE
      If the hub is removed for any reason, a new bearing assembly must be installed. Never attempt to re-use a bearing.

    4.  

    1. Disconnect the battery ground lead.
    2.  
    3. Support the vehicle at the rear and remove the appropriate rear road wheel.
    4.  
    5. Remove and discard the hub nut, apply the brakes to prevent rotation.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake caliper, but do not disconnect the hydraulics

    9. Matchmark the hub carrier fulcrum bolt head and the carrier.
    10.  
    11. Loosen the hub carrier fulcrum nut. Disconnect the ABS sensor multiplug at the hub carrier.
    12.  
    13. Protect the driveshaft thread.
    14.  
    15. Withdraw the hub from the axle shaft.
      NOTE
      In the wheel-free condition, the axle is in tension and the flanges will separate as the nuts are withdrawn.

    17. Release the axle shaft. Remove and discard the (4) nuts axle shaft to differential output shaft. Clear the axle shaft from the output flange studs. Remove & keep safe the camber shim.
      NOTE
      The axle shaft nuts may damage the studs upon removal. Check the thread condition by engaging a new nut 2 or 3 threads by hand.

    19. Inspect the output flange studs & renew if there is evidence of damage/distortion.

    21. Clean all traces of thread locking agent from the hub splines and axle shaft, if it is to be re-used.

    To install:

    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following:
    2.  
    3. Secure the axle shaft. Apply thread locking agent, to the spline.
    4.  
    5. Check and adjust as required, the final drive unit oil level
    6.  
    7. Check and adjust as required, the rear wheel alignment.
    8.  
    9. During use, a small amount of surplus grease may appear around the bearing seal but this does not indicate a failed bearing or seal. The grease should not be removed as this will act as an additional barrier to the ingress of water or foreign matter.
      NOTE
      Excessive end float or bearing rumble will indicate a failed bearing; maximum permissible end float is 0.13 mm. Take care not to confuse suspension ball joint or upper or lower fulcrum bush movement for bearing end float.

    10.  

    If the hub is removed for any reason, a new bearing assembly must be installed. Never attempt to re-use a bearing.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the transmission fluid.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Wheel and tire
       
      Wheel hub nut
       
      Tie rod end
       
      Lower ball joint nut
       
      Subframe reinforcing plate
       
      Subframe mounting bolts
       
      Wheel knuckle
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Halfshaft snap ring
       

    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      New halfshaft snap ring
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Wheel knuckle
       
      Lower ball joint: Tighten nut to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
       
      Subframe: Tighten bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
       
      Subframe reinforcing plate: Tighten bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      Tie rod end: Tighten bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      Loosely install wheel hub nut
       
      Wheel and tire
       

    2.  
    3. Lower vehicle so suspension is loaded, and tighten the wheel hub nut to 199 ft. lbs. (270 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Fill the transmission with fluid and road test vehicle.
    6.  

    Front



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Drain the transmission fluid.
    4.  
    5. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Wheel and tire
       
      Wheel hub nut
       
      Tie rod end
       
      Lower ball joint nut
       
      Subframe reinforcing plate
       
      Subframe mounting bolts
       
      Wheel knuckle
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Halfshaft snap ring
       

    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      New halfshaft snap ring
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Wheel knuckle
       
      Lower ball joint: Tighten nut to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
       
      Subframe: Tighten bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
       
      Subframe reinforcing plate: Tighten bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      Tie rod end: Tighten bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
       
      Loosely install wheel hub nut
       
      Wheel and tire
       

    2.  
    3. Lower vehicle so suspension is loaded, and tighten the wheel hub nut to 244 ft. lbs. (330 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Fill the transmission with fluid and road test vehicle.
    6.  

    Rear



    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Rear wheel
       
      Brake caliper
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Hub carrier pivot bolt
       
      Hub retaining nut
       

    4.  
    5. Press the stub shaft out of the hub and remove the halfshaft.
    6.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      4 axle shaft-to-differential output shaft bolts. Tighten the bolts 60-73 ft. lbs. (81-99 Nm).
       
      Halfshaft in the wheel hub by applying Loctite® 270 thread locking compound to the splines
       
      Hub carrier pivot bolt by aligning the bolt head matchmarks. Tighten it to 66-81 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
       
      Hub retaining nut. Use a new nut and tighten it to 224-248 ft. lbs. (304-337 Nm).
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Brake caliper
       
      Rear wheel
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    2.  
    3. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.

    NOTE

    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Wheel and tire
       
      Loosen the wheel hub nut
       
      Brake disc
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Outer tie rod nut
       
      Lower arm from wheel knuckle
       
      Wheel hub nut
       
      Disconnect halfshaft
       
      Wheel knuckle
       
      Halfshaft
       
      Halfshaft retaining clip
       
      Halfshaft seal
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Install or connect the following:

      Halfshaft seal
       
      New halfshaft retaining clip
       

    2.  
    3. Apply Loctite to the halfshaft splines and install the halfshaft, making sure the retaining clip is correctly seated.
    4.  
    5. Install the wheel knuckle assembly, then install the old wheel hub nut and tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Attach the wheel knuckle to the halfshaft, and the lower arm to the wheel knuckle. Install or connect the following:

      Outer tie rod nut
       
      Wheel speed sensor
       
      Brake disc
       
      Wheel and tire
       

    8.  
    9. Remove the old wheel hub nut. Install a new hub nut and tighten to 222 ft. lbs. (300 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle so the suspension is loaded.
    12.  
    13. Tighten the lower arm to the wheel knuckle bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
    14.  
    15. Tighten the outer tie rod nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
    16.  
    17. Check the axle fluid level.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
    2.  
    3. Remove or disconnect the following:

      Negative battery cable
       
      Wheel and tire
       
      Wheel hub
       
      Upper arm bolt
       
      Front lower arm bolt
       
      Support rear lower arm with jack stand
       
      Rear lower arm bolt
       
      Halfshaft
       

    4.  

    To install:

    1. Reverse the removal procedure to install. Tighten all control arm bolts to 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm).
