Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the luggage compartment side trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Vehicles with Dynamic Stability Control, disconnect the DSC electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly upper retaining nuts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel.
  8.  
  9. Support the shock absorber and spring assembly.
    CAUTION
    Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. It is essential that the springs are correctly positioned in the vehicle. The upper mount housing contains a painted mark that corresponds with the coil spring upper wire end. If the mark is not evident it is necessary to paint a new mark in the required location. If the upper mount housing is replaced, the painted mark must be copied across from the previous mount.

  11. Remove the lower bolt. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly.
  12.  
  13. Make sure the dynamic stability control electrical connector is correctly aligned.
    WARNING
    Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the electrical connector.


    NOTE
    The final tightening of the suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle on its wheels.

  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque the lower bolt to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm); the upper nuts to 41 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) without DSC; 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm) with DSC.

NOTE
Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support on axle stands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
    NOTE
    Do not suspend the caliper from the brake hose as this will damage the hose.

  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper from the carrier and secure to the suspension mounting bracket using a tie strap.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard the tie strap securing the wheel speed sensor harness to the brake hose clip.
  10.  
  11. Mark the control arm at the pivot pin eccentric flange marker to aid installation.
    WARNING
    To prevent damage to the parking brake cable, the hub carrier must be supported on removal from the control arm.

  13. Remove the hub carrier from the control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the pivot pin from the hub carrier.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hub carrier and support on a block of wood.
    NOTE
    Note the position of the shims during removal. They must be returned to their original position during installation.

  19. Noting their positions, remove the shim from each end of the pivot pin sleeve.
    WARNING
    Ensure the special tools are positioned diametrically opposite on the spring and the arms are correctly seated. When compressing the spring, tighten the special-tool adjustment bolts evenly.

  21. Install a spring compressor set on the spring. Evenly tighten the special tool tensioning bolts to compress the spring.

  23. Remove the shock absorber to control arm mounting nut and bolt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nuts securing the shock absorber and spring upper mounting to the body.

  27. Using the special tools 204-179-1, secure the upper mounting to the spring.

  29. Using a jack, retract the shock absorber through the control arm aperture.
  30.  
  31. Position a bolt through the spring coils and shock absorber lower bushing, to temporarily locate the shock absorber.
  32.  
  33. Partially lower the jack for access to the top of the shock absorber.
  34.  
  35. On vehicles with adaptive damping, disconnect the shock absorber electrical connector by pressing the lugs down and pulling the connector up.
  36.  
  37. Lower and remove the jack.
  38.  
  39. Remove the shock absorber and spring assembly from the vehicle and place the assembly on a work bench.
  40.  
  41. Clean the upper mounting spring location.
  42.  
  43. Remove the pigtail seat and clean the control arm lower spring location.
  44.  
  45. Compress the shock absorber and withdraw the bolt from the spring coils.
  46.  
  47. Remove the shock absorber from the upper mounting.
  48.  
  49. Position a wrench on the shock absorber shaft flats to prevent rotation (wrench in socket on vehicles with adaptive damping).
  50.  
  51. Remove the shock absorber upper retaining nut.
  52.  
  53. Remove the upper washer and isolator.
  54.  
  55. Remove the special tools 204-179-1 and remove the upper mounting from the spring.
  56.  
  57. Remove the shock upper mounting assembly from the spring.
  58.  
  59. Remove the spring upper isolator.
  60.  
  61. Remove the upper spring pan.
  62.  
  63. Remove the packing ring.
  64.  

To install:

  1. Install the spring pigtail lower seat on to the control arm.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring in the upper mounting.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring upper isolator.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper spring pan.
  8.  
  9. Install the packing ring.

  11. Ensuring the correct orientation, secure the upper mounting to the spring using the special tools 204-179-1.
  12.  
  13. Position the spring upper mounting assembly on to the shock absorber. Apply a thin coat of grease to the upper mounting bush.
  14.  
  15. Ensure that the washer, lower isolator and bush are correctly positioned on the shock absorber shaft.
  16.  
  17. Position the shock absorber shaft in the upper mounting.
  18.  
  19. Secure the top of the shock absorber to the upper mounting.
  20.  
  21. Install the spring upper isolator.
  22.  
  23. Install the upper washer.
  24.  
  25. Install but do not tighten the locknut on to the shock absorber.
  26.  
  27. Manually retract the shock absorber and place a bolt through the spring coils and the shock absorber lower-bush. Secure the shock absorber to the upper mounting.
  28.  
  29. Position a wrench on the shock absorber shaft flats to prevent rotation (wrench in socket on vehicles with adaptive damping).
  30.  
  31. Tighten the shock absorber upper lock nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm); 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm) on vehicles with adaptive damping.

  33. Position the shock absorber and spring assembly to the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Manually retract the shock absorber and remove the temporary securing bolt.
  36.  
  37. Remove the special tools 204-179-1.
  38.  
  39. Align the shock absorber lower bush to the control arm and install the mounting bolt.
  40.  
  41. Install but do not tighten the nut.
  42.  
  43. Make sure the adaptive damping electrical connector is correctly aligned.
    CAUTION
    Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the electrical connector.

  45. On vehicles with adaptive damping, connect the shock absorber electrical connector, ensuring the electrical connector key locates in the socket keyway.
  46.  
  47. Seat the upper mounting in the body location.
    NOTE
    If adaptive damping is installed, ensure the harness is correctly positioned.

  49. Ensuring that the spring is seated on the isolator and spring pan, position the upper spring pan on to the body studs.
  50.  
  51. Release the spring tension.
  52.  
  53. Ensuring that the spring is correctly located, evenly loosen the adjuster bolts on the special tools 204-179.
  54.  
  55. Remove the special tools 204-179.
  56.  
  57. Fully seat and secure the upper spring pan to the body.
  58.  
  59. Ensure the spring pan is correctly seated in the body location.
  60.  
  61. Install the nuts securing the spring pan to the body studs. Tighten the upper strut mounting nuts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Tighten the lower strut bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).

  63. Install the shims on the pivot pin sleeve in the positions noted during removal.
  64.  
  65. Install the hub assembly to the control arm assembly.
  66.  
  67. Position the hub and carrier to the control arm.
  68.  
  69. Install the pivot pin ensuring that the eccentric flange correctly seats in the control arm groove.
  70.  
  71. Align the marker on the pivot pin flange with the mark made on control arm.
  72.  
  73. Install the nut on to the pivot pin and, ensuring the pin position is not disturbed, tighten the nut to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  74.  
  75. Release the tie strap securing the brake caliper to the suspension mounting bracket.
  76.  
  77. Install the brake caliper on to the carrier.
  78.  
  79. Position the caliper assembly on to the carrier.
  80.  
  81. Install the guide pins and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  82.  
  83. Install the dust caps.
  84.  
  85. Install the brake caliper spring clip.
  86.  
  87. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  88.  
  89. Using a new tie strap, secure the wheel speed sensor harness to the brake hose clip.
  90.  
  91. Install the rear wheel.
  92.  
  93. Remove the axle stands and lower the vehicle.
  94.  
  95. Check and adjust the rear wheel alignment as necessary.
