Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the rear brake disc.
  2.  
  3. Remove and discard the rear halfshaft retaining nut.

  7. Using the special tools, remove the wheel hub.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel hub. Tighten to

    2002 through VIN C59260: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    2002.25-05 from VIN C59261: 47 ft. lbs. (63 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Install a new rear halfshaft retaining nut. Tighten to: 200 ft. lbs. (270 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Install the rear brake disc.
  6.  


NOTE
Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

  1. Release handbrake.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle on a four-post lift.
  4.  
  5. Fully loosen but do not remove parking brake cable adjuster nut.
  6.  
  7. Release appropriate side parking brake cable from connecting clip.
  8.  
  9. Remove parking brake cable through equalizer (LH side cable only).
  10.  
  11. Lower four-post lift.
  12.  
  13. Raise rear of vehicle to working height and support on stands.
  14.  
  15. Remove rear wheel.

  19. Slacken but do not remove hub to axle shaft securing nut.
  20.  
  21. Remove securing nuts and withdraw special tool 204-195 from hub.
  22.  
  23. Remove rear brake disc.
  24.  
  25. Remove parking brake shoes.
  26.  
  27. Remove wheel speed sensor.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect wheel speed sensor harness from sensor.
  30.  
  31. Remove wheel speed sensor securing bolt and withdraw sensor from hub carrier.
  32.  
  33. Sever and discard wheel speed sensor harness tie strap and position harness for access.
  34.  
  35. Remove hub nut and collar.
  36.  
  37. Install a thread protector on axle shaft.

  49. Remove cable retaining clip.

  51. Draw cable through suspension mounting bracket aperture.

  53. Remove parking brake cable to hub carrier grommet.
  54.  
  55. Remove back plate.
  56.  
  57. Remove two bolts and two screws securing back plate to hub carrier.
  58.  
  59. Remove back plate complete with parking brake cable.

    NOTE
    Note position of shims during removal. They must be returned to their original positions during installation.

  71. Remove pivot pin sleeve from hub carrier.

  73. Using a hydraulic press, remove hub from carrier.
  74.  
  75. Place hub carrier on a work bench.

  77. Remove ABS rotor from hub carrier.
  78.  
  79. Remove outer seal and bearing assembly from hub carrier.

  81. Using a drift, remove and discard outer seal.

  103. Position hub carrier on a block of wood.
  104.  
  105. Using a drift, remove and discard outer bearing cup.
  106.  
  107. Clean hub and hub carrier.
  108.  

To install:

  1. Place hub carrier on press bed and insert inner bearing cup.
  2.  
  3. Using a hydraulic press, install new inner bearing cup in hub carrier.
  4.  
  5. Using a hydraulic press, install outer bearing cup in hub carrier.
  6.  
  7. Place hub carrier on a work bench.
  8.  
  9. Install outer bearing in hub carrier.
  10.  
  11. Install hub in outer bearing and carrier.
  12.  
  13. Install inner bearing in hub carrier.
  14.  
  15. Install bearing spacer to hub.
  16.  
  17. Install a 3.47 mm (maximum thickness) shim on hub.
  18.  
  19. Install inner bearing in hub carrier.
    NOTE
    Do not allow press load to be directed on to hub studs.

  20.  
  21. Using a hydraulic press, install ABS-sensor rotor to hub.
    NOTE
    Do not use excessive force when levering hub.

  22.  
  23. Measure hub end-float.
  24.  
  25. Secure hub carrier in vice.

  29. Using two levers, measure and record hub end-float.
  30.  
  31. Remove special tools from hub carrier.

  33. Using hydraulic press, remove hub and outer bearing assembly from carrier.
  34.  
  35. Remove ABS rotor and inner bearing from hub carrier.
  36.  
  37. Remove ABS rotor.
  38.  
  39. Remove inner bearing.
  40.  
  41. Remove outer bearing assembly from hub.
  42.  
  43. Remove bearing shim.
  44.  
  45. Remove bearing spacer.
  46.  
  47. Remove outer bearing.
  48.  
  49. Pack new inner and outer bearings with Shell Retinax 'A', or equivalent, grease.
  50.  
  51. Install outer bearing and using special tool 205-234, fully seat seal in hub carrier.
  52.  
  53. Using a press, install hub in carrier/bearing assembly.
  54.  
  55. Install inner bearing assembly.
  56.  
  57. Install bearing spacer.
  58.  
  59. Install bearing shim.
  60.  
  61. Install inner bearing.
  62.  
  63. Determine hub end float. Measure and record end-float as a datum. Calculating from datum, select a shim that will achieve a 0.076 mm end-float.
  64.  
  65. Install new bearing shim.
  66.  
  67. Install selected shim.
  68.  
  69. Install inner bearing.
  70.  
  71. Using special tool 205-234, install inner bearing seal.
  72.  
  73. Place block of wood on hydraulic press-bed and position hub carrier on block.
    NOTE
    Do not allow press load to be directed on to hub studs.

  74.  
  75. Align ABS rotor to hub and operate press to fully seat rotor on hub.
  76.  
  77. Install pivot pin sleeve in carrier bearings.
  78.  
  79. Install shims on pivot pin sleeve in positions noted during removal.
  80.  
  81. Position hub carrier assembly on control arm.
  82.  
  83. Ensuring shims remain positioned on sleeve, position hub carrier assembly on control arm.
  84.  
  85. Install hub assembly to control arm and axle assembly.
  86.  
  87. Position hub and carrier to control arm and axle shaft.
  88.  
  89. Install pivot pin ensuring that eccentric flange correctly seats in control arm groove.
  90.  
  91. Install washer and nut on pivot pin, but DO NOT tighten nut.
  92.  
  93. Install hub on axle shaft.
  94.  
  95. Route parking brake cable through hub carrier aperture and install grommet.
  96.  
  97. Apply Loctite 270 to axle shaft splines and thread, and fully seat hub on shaft.
  98.  
  99. Install locating collar and hub nut on axle shaft, but DO NOT tighten hub nut.
  100.  
  101. Tighten pivot pin nut.
  102.  
  103. Align marker on pivot pin flange with mark made on control arm.
  104.  
  105. Ensuring pin position is not disturbed, tighten nut to 65-87 ft. lbs. (88-118 Nm).
  106.  
  107. Install wheel speed sensor on hub carrier.
  108.  
  109. Position sensor on hub carrier and install and tighten bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  110.  
  111. Connect wheel speed sensor harness to sensor.
  112.  
  113. Using new tie strap, secure wheel speed sensor harness to hub carrier.
  114.  
  115. Install handbrake shoes.
  116.  
  117. Install brake disc.
  118.  
  119. Position special tool 204-195 on hub studs and install securing nuts.
  120.  
  121. Tighten hub nut to 225-249 ft. lbs. (304-336 Nm).
  122.  
  123. Remove securing nuts and withdraw special tool 204-195 from hub.
  124.  
  125. Install rear wheel.
  126.  
  127. Remove stands and lower vehicle onto wheels.
  128.  
  129. Raise vehicle on four-post lift.
  130.  
  131. Route parking brake cable through suspension mounting bracket and secure with clip. Route parking brake LH cable through equalizer.
  132.  
  133. Install LH cable in connecting clip.
  134.  
  135. Adjust parking brake cable.
  136.  
  137. Lower four-post lift.
  138.  
  139. Apply parking brake.
  140.  
  141. Carry out rear wheel alignment check and adjust as necessary.
  142.  

Through VIN M45254
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the axle shaft hub nut.
  8.  
  9. Detach the brake caliper.
  10.  
  11. Unclip the ABS sensor wiring harness.
  12.  
  13. Detach the ABS sensor.
  14.  
  15. Detach the outer tie rod.
  16.  
  17. Detach the lower arm from the hub assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake disc.
  20.  
  21. Detach the hub assembly from the driveshaft.
  22.  
  23. Using the special tools, remove the hub from the bearing.
  24.  
  25. Using the special tools, remove the inner bearing race from the hub.
  26.  
  27. Remove the circlip.
  28.  
  29. Press the bearing from the hub carrier.

To install:

  1. The final tightening of the rear suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle on its wheels.
  2.  
  3. Press the hub bearing to the hub carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install the circlip.
  6.  
  7. Using the special tools, install the hub to the bearing.
  8.  
  9. Install the hub assembly to the upper arm. Torque to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach the hub assembly to the driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake disc.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower arm to the hub assembly. Torque to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the outer tie rod. Torque to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the ABS sensor.
  20.  
  21. Attach the ABS sensor wiring harness.
  22.  
  23. Install the brake caliper.
  24.  
  25. Install the axle shaft hub nut. Torque to 303 ft. lbs. (410 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the wheel.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the wheel nuts.

NOTE

  39. Clean hub and hub carrier.

To install:

  1. Loosen the wheel hub nut.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Detach the anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensor.
  6.  
  7. Detach the outer tie rod.
  8.  
  9. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel hub nut.
  12.  
  13. Using a hub puller, detach the halfshaft.

  15. Remove the wheel knuckle assembly.

  23. Using a press, remove the bearing from the wheel knuckle.

To install:


NOTE

  5. Using the special tools, install the wheel hub to the bearing.

  7. Install the wheel knuckle assembly. Tighten to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Using the old wheel hub nut tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove and discard the old wheel hub nut.
  12.  
  13. Install a new wheel hub nut tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Attach the wheel knuckle to the halfshaft.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower arm to the wheel knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Install the outer tie rod retaining bolt.
  20.  
  21. Install the ABS sensor. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the brake disc.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the wheel hub nut to 222 ft. lbs. (300 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the lower arm to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Tighten the tie rod end to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  32.  

From VIN M45255
  1. Loosen the wheel hub nut.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Detach the anti-lock brake system (ABS) sensor.
  6.  
  7. Detach the outer tie rod.
  8.  
  9. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel hub nut.

  19. Using the special tools, remove the inner bearing race from the hub.

  23. Press the bearing from the wheel knuckle.

NOTE
The final tightening of the rear suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle on its wheels.

  1. Press the bearing to the wheel knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the circlip.

  5. Using the special tools, install the wheel hub to the bearing.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel knuckle assembly. Tighten to 67 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Using the old wheel hub nut tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach the wheel knuckle to the halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the lower arm to the wheel knuckle retaining bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install the outer tie rod retaining bolt.
  16.  
  17. Install the ABS sensor. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the brake disc.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove and discard the old wheel hub nut, install a new wheel hub nut.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the wheel hub nut. Tighten to 222 ft. lbs. (300 Nm).
    NOTE
    The final tightening of the rear suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle on its wheels.

  26.  
  27. Tighten the lower arm-to-knuckle to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the tie rod end to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
