Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Steering rack and pinion
     
    Starter motor wiring connectors
     
    Starter motor
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor. Tighten the bolts to 28-35 ft. lbs. (38-48 Nm).
     
    Starter motor wiring connectors
     
    Steering rack and pinion
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  

  1. Open the driver's door, or both doors if necessary, to allow the side windows to drop. Ensure that the doors remain open until after the battery has been disconnected.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the battery cover.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle.

  9. Working from below the vehicle, remove the power steering rack for access.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the starter motor main terminal.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the starter motor bolts.
  16.  
  17. Carefully remove the starter motor.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter motor securing bolts to 38-48 Nm.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering rack. Refill the reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the steering system.
  22.  
  23. Lower the car.
  24.  
  25. Connect the battery and install the battery cover.
  26.  

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. On coupes, raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. On convertibles:
    1. Remove the radiator splash shield.
    2.  
    3. Remove the underbody front cross brace.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the generator lower cooling duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the generator upper cooling duct.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the starter cables.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter motor.
  14.  
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

2.5L & 3.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the special tool.

  7. Position and adjust the special tool rear height adjuster. Left-hand shown, right-hand similar.

  11. Position and adjust the special tool engine height adjusters.

  13. Detach the support bar center fasteners. Remove the support bar end bolts.

  15. Detach the starter motor solenoid cover.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter motor rear retaining bolt.

  21. Remove the starter motor front retaining bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the starter motor.

  25. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to the mounting bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten to support bar end bolts to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm); the center bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

3.0L & 4.0L Engines
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the electrical connector protective cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oxygen sensor.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oxygen sensor.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the ground cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the harness retaining bracket.
  18.  
  19. Detach the harness.
  20.  
  21. Remove the harness retaining bracket.
  22.  
  23. Remove the starter motor bolts.

  25. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air deflector.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the engine ground cable.
  6.  
  7. Detach the starter motor positive cables.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter motor.
  12.  
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. With the V6, tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25Nm). With 4.2L engine, tighten the mounting bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
