REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely on jackstands, then remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Index the driveshaft to the differential yoke for the proper alignment upon installation. Disconnect the driveshaft at the axle yoke and secure the shaft to the frame rail.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the steering linkage from the steering knuckles. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle housing.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with a stabilizer bar, remove the nuts attaching the stabilizer bar connecting links to the spring tie plates.
  8.  
  9. On vehicles equipped with a sway bar, remove the nuts attaching the sway bar connecting links to the spring tie plates.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the breather tube from the axle housing. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link bolts at the spring clips.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake calipers, or drums, hub and rotor, or brake shoes, and the brake shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove the U-bolts and the tie plates.
  16.  
  17. Support the assembly on a jack and loosen the nuts securing the rear shackles, but do not remove the bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front spring shackle bolts. Lower the springs to the floor.
  20.  
  21. Pull the jack and axle housing from underneath the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

Tighten the various fasteners to the specified values listed after the procedure.

  1. Raise the axle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the front spring shackle bolts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the nuts securing the rear shackles.
  6.  
  7. Install the U-bolts and the tie plates.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake calipers, or drums, hub and rotor, or brake shoes, and the brake shield.
  10.  
  11. Connect the breather tube to the axle housing.
  12.  
  13. Connect the stabilizer bar link bolts at the spring clips.
  14.  
  15. On vehicles equipped with a sway bar, install the nuts attaching sway bar connecting links to the spring tie plates.
  16.  
  17. If the vehicle is equipped with a stabilizer bar, install the nuts attaching the stabilizer bar connecting links to the spring tie plates.
  18.  
  19. Connect the steering linkage to the steering knuckles.
  20.  
  21. Connect the shock absorbers at the axle housing.
  22.  
  23. Connect the driveshaft at the axle yoke.
  24.  
  25. Install the wheels.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Tighten the suspension fasteners to the following specifications:

CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-3B and Utility models-


7 / 16 in. spring U-bolt nuts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
 
All other spring U-bolt nuts: 80 ft. lbs. (109 Nm)
 
Spring pivot bolts: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
 

CJ-5 and CJ-6 models-


Connecting rod ball studs: 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm) minimum
 
Spring shackle bolts: 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
 
Shock absorber lower mounting nut: 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm)
 
Spring pivot bolts: 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm)
 
9 / 16 in. spring U-bolt nuts: 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm)
 
1 / 2 in. spring U-bolt nuts: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
