REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
4-134 and 6-230 Engines
A press is used for removal and installation of guides.
- Place the head in the press and press the old guide out through the bottom and the new one in through the top. On the 6-230, all the guides are the same. On the 4-134, the only guides in the head are the intakes.
- Once the new guide is in place, check its protrusion. On the 6-230, the guide should protrude 0.45 in. (11.43mm) above the head surface. On the 4-134, the guide should be flush with the head surface.
- The exhaust valve guides on the 4-134 are also replaceable. These guides are located in the block. A press is not necessary for this procedure. The engine should be removed from the vehicle. The head, oil pan and crankshaft should be removed. The guides are driven out of their bores from above, with a driver made for the purpose. The new guides are then driven in with the same tool, until their tops are 1 in. (25.4mm) below the block surface.
On all three engines, after the guides are in place, they must be reamed:
6-230-0.342-0.343 in. (8.6868-8.7122mm)
A press is not necessary for this procedure. The engine should be removed from the vehicle. The cylinder head and oil pan should be removed.
- The guides are pulled out of their bores from above, with a tool made for the purpose.
- Check the valve guide bore and the outside diameter of the new guide. Ream the bore, if necessary, to obtain a 0.0005-0.0030 in. (0.0127-0.0762mm) press fit. Guides are available in 0.0005 in. (0.0127mm) and 0.0055 in. (0.1397mm) oversizes.
- The new guides are then pulled into place with the same tool, until their tops are 1 7 / 32 in. (30.96mm) below the block surface.
- Ream the new guides to a diameter of 0.3423-0.3432 in. (8.694-8.717mm).
