Fig. Fig. 2: When adjusting the door lock, measure the distance from the edge of of the handle casing to the tip of the boss on the trigger striker lever (arrow)

Should the outside door handle fail to release the lock easily, it is usually due to the trigger in the handle failing to release the lock until it is nearly flush with the handle. This is due to wear or a bent release lever on the lock assembly. To correct this problem, perform the following:

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.
  3. Remove the outside door handle.
  4.
  5. Close and lock the door with the button.
  6.
  7. Working through the door handle hole, measure the distance from the outside face of the sheet metal to the lock release lever.
  8.
  9. On the door handle, measure the distance from the edge of the handle casing to the tip of the boss on the trigger striker lever.
  10.
  11. Subtract the two measurements. The result will be the amount that the lever boss must be built up. Brazing is an acceptable way to restore the lost metal. Add slightly more than necessary and file it down to the correct dimension.
  12.
  13. Lubricate the working parts, install the handle and check lock operation.
  14.
