REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Utility Models
WITH TWO-PIECE WINDSHIELD

To replace either side of the glass or both glass sections, their common frame must first be removed.

  1. Remove the cover plate from the center bar garnish molding.
  2.
  3. Remove the mirror bracket plate.
  4.
  5. Remove the center bar.
  6.
  7. Remove the outer cover panel.
  8.
  9. Remove the two garnish moldings.
  10.
  11. Have an assistant support the windshield assembly from the inside, while you, working on the outside, force the rubber molding off the body flange with a wooden spatula. Start at the top center and press inward while prying off the molding, to prevent it from slipping back over the flange.
  12.
  13. Remove the pane of glass to be replaced, by working the rubber channel over the edge of the glass. It may be necessary to break the cement seal with a prytool.
  14.

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean and inspect the weatherstripping. Replace it if it is worn, cracked or brittle.
  2.
  3. Apply a 1 / 16 in. (1.6mm) bead of 3M Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound, or equivalent, completely around the weatherstripping in the glass cavity.
  4.
  5. Install the weatherstripping on the glass.
  6.
  7. Install the glass in the frame, working the rubber weatherstripping into position.
  8.
  9. Mix a soap and water solution and thoroughly coat the body flange and the rubber weatherstripping with it.
  10.
  11. Place a 1 / 16 - 1 / 8 in. (1.580-3.175mm) diameter cord in the flange cavity of the weatherstripping, completely around the circumference. You will need at least 8 ft. (2.43m) of string. Let the ends of the cord hang outside the glass at the upper center.
  12.
  13. Position the glass frame and weatherstripping in the opening. Pull on the ends of the cord to pull the lip of the weatherstripping over the body flange.
  14.
  15. Use a wood spatula to lock the weatherstripping.
  16.
  17. Apply a bead of 3M Windshield Sealer, or equivalent, between the weatherstripping and the body flange, around its entire perimeter. Clean off the excess.
  18.

  1. Unscrew and remove the garnish molding covers.
  2.
  3. Remove the garnish moldings.
  4.
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with a heater, there are rubber plugs under the garnish molding at each side of the defroster openings. Save the plugs.
  6.
  7. Using a wood spatula, unlock the rubber weatherstripping.
  8.
  9. Carefully remove the windshield and discard the weatherstripping.
  10.
  11. Apply a 1 / 16 in. (1.58mm) bead of 3M Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound, or equivalent, completely around hem flange groove of the new weatherstripping.
  12.
  13. Install the weatherstripping on the hem flange with the weatherstripping lock facing outside.
  14.
  15. Install the filler tubing beneath the weatherstripping lip, facing inside. Locate the 6 in. (15.2cm) long piece of tubing at the top center of the windshield opening. Locate the 32 in. (81.3cm) long piece of tubing along the bottom edge of the windshield opening with the ends of the tubing extending beyond the defroster openings in the instrument panel. Install these pieces of tubing before installing the windshield glass.
  16.
  17. With the weatherstripping unlocked, install the windshield glass in the glass groove of the weatherstripping. Fill the glass groove with a 1 / 16 in. (1.58mm) bead of 3M Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound, or equivalent.
  18.
  19. Lock the weatherstripping into place with a wood spatula. Remove all excess sealer.
  20.
  21. Install the garnish moldings, molding covers and defroster rubber plugs. The 1 1 / 2 in. long screws are used along the top; the 1 1 / 4 in. long screws along the sides and bottom.
  22.
  23. If a different type of garnish molding was used, new garnish molding screw holes must be drilled before the molding can be installed. Use the new moldings as templates as follows:
    1. Position the moldings on the door pillars with the moldings as far as possible to the rear.
    2.
    3. Drill three 1 / 8 in. (3mm) diameter holes into each pillar and loosely attach the moldings with the screws.
    4.
    5. Position the ends of the moldings at both the top and bottom center of the windshield opening with dimension A, in the accompanying illustration, 1 / 8 - 3 / 16 in. (3-5mm).
    6.
    7. Drill seven 1 / 8 in. (3mm) diameter holes in the header rail and nine 1 / 8 in. (3mm) diameter holes in the instrument panel.
    8.
    9. Install the garnish moldings as instructed in Step 11.
    10.
