Manual Steering Gear

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



The steering gear must be removed down through the floor pan.

  1. Remove the left front fender.
  2.  
  3. On early CJ-2A and Utility models with remote control steering linkage, disconnect the control rods at the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the steering column bracket from the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column cover plate from the floorboard.
  12.  
  13. On early CJ-2A and Utility models, remove the two screws holding the shift control rods housing to the steering column.
  14.  
  15. On CJ-2A models, remove the horn wire contact. On all other models, disconnect the horn wire.
  16.  
  17. On early CJ-2A and Utility models, lower the shift linkage through the floor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the drag link from the steering gear arm ball.
  20.  
  21. Unbolt the steering gear housing from the frame.
  22.  
  23. Lower the steering gear through the floor pan and over the outside of the frame rail.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Lift the steering gear through the floor pan and into position on the frame rail.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts attaching the steering gear housing to the frame. Tighten the 3 / 8 in. diameter bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the 7 / 16 in. diameter bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the drag link on the steering gear arm ball.
  6.  
  7. On early CJ-2A and Utility models, install the shift linkage.
  8.  
  9. On CJ-2A models, install the horn wire contact. On all other models, Connect the horn wire.
  10.  
  11. On early CJ-2A and Utility models, install the two screws holding the shift control rods housing to the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering column cover plate on the floorboard.
  14.  
  15. Connect the exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  16.  
  17. Bolt the steering column bracket to the instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering wheel.
  20.  
  21. On early CJ-2A and Utility models with remote control steering linkage, connect the control rods at the transmission.
  22.  
  23. Install the left front fender.
  24.  
  25. Adjust the shifting linkage on early CJ-2A and Utility models.
  26.  

ADJUSTMENTS



Adjustments must be made in the order given. Failure to following sequence could result in damage to the gear.

Before adjusting, remove all load from the system by disconnecting the drag link from the steering arm and loosening the instrument panel bracket bolts and the steering gear-to-frame bolts.

Steering Shaft Play
  1. Remove the shims installed between the steering gear housing and the upper cover.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the housing side cover adjusting screw.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the housing cover to cut and remove one or more shims as required. Proper adjustment allows a slight drag and free operation.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the cover.
  8.  

Backlash
  1. Loosen the adjusting screw locknut.
  2.  
  3. Turn the adjusting screw in until a very slight drag is felt through the mid-point in steering wheel travel. This procedure is done with the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the adjusting screw locknut.
