REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1976-79
  1. Remove the dipstick.
  2.  
  3. Detach the radiator shroud.
  4.  
  5. Mark the driveshafts for reinstallation.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle has low range, disconnect the shift linkage and remove the unit.
  8.  
  9. Detach the speedometer cable.
  10.  
  11. Mark and remove the Emergency Drive hoses and wire.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the vacuum line bracket at the rear of the transfer case.
  14.  
  15. Detach the downshift solenoid wire at the transmission.
  16.  
  17. Remove the starter.
  18.  
  19. Remove the torque converter housing inspection cover.
  20.  
  21. Matchmark the torque converter and drive plate for reassembly. Remove the bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the rear support cushion to crossmember nuts.
  24.  
  25. Support the transmission with a transmission jack, using a safety chain.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear crossmember.
  28.  
  29. Detach the transmission shift linkage. Detach the linkage bracket, bushing, and lever from the frame.
  30.  
  31. Detach and wire up the front driveshaft.
  32.  
  33. Detach the cooler lines from the transmission.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the vacuum hose at the modulator.
  36.  
  37. Support the engine.
  38.  
  39. Remove the converter housing to engine bolts.
  40.  
  41. Remove the dipstick tube.
  42.  
  43. Move the transmission back till it clears the engine. Hold the converter in place and lower the transmission.
  44.  
  45. On installation, align the torque converter and drive plate matchmarks. Dowels on the engine must line up with holes in the converter housing. Torque the transmission-to-engine bolts 42 ft. lbs.
  46.  
  47. Move the transmission back till it clears the engine. Hold the converter in place and lower the transmission.
  48.  
  49. Install the dipstick tube.
  50.  
  51. Connect the vacuum hose at the modulator.
  52.  
  53. Attach the cooler lines from the transmission.
  54.  
  55. Attach the front driveshaft.
  56.  
  57. Attach the transmission shift linkage.
  58.  
  59. Attach the linkage bracket, bushing, and lever to the frame.
  60.  
  61. Install the rear crossmember. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
  62.  
  63. Install the rear support cushion to crossmember nuts.
  64.  
  65. Matchmark the torque converter and drive plate for reassembly. Install the bolts. Torque them to 33 ft. lbs.
  66.  
  67. Install the torque converter housing inspection cover.
  68.  
  69. Install the starter.
  70.  
  71. Attach the downshift solenoid wire at the transmission.
  72.  
  73. Bolt the vacuum line bracket to the rear of the transfer case.
  74.  
  75. Install the Emergency Drive hoses and wire.
  76.  
  77. Attach the speedometer cable.
  78.  
  79. If the vehicle has low range, connect the shift linkage and install the unit.
  80.  
  81. Install the radiator shroud.
  82.  
  83. Install the dipstick.
  84.  

1980-86
  1. Remove the fan shroud.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the transmission fill tube upper bracket.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the converter housing inspection cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fill tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter.
  12.  
  13. Mark the driveshafts for installation.
  14.  
  15. Remove the driveshafts.
  16.  
  17. On 8-304 models, disconnect the exhaust pipes at the manifolds.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the gearshift and throttle linkages.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the neutral start switch.
  22.  
  23. Mark the driveplate and converter for realignment.
  24.  
  25. Remove the converter-to-driveplate bolts.
  26.  
  27. Take up the transmission weight with a floor jack. It's a good idea to chain the transmission to the jack.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear crossmember-to-transmission bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear crossmember.
  32.  
  33. Lower the transmission slightly and disconnect the fluid cooler lines.
  34.  
  35. Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
  36.  
  37. Roll the transmission rearward to clear the crankshaft, lower the jack and remove the unit.
  38.  
  39. Position the transmission against the engine.
  40.  
  41. Install the transmission-to-engine bolts. Torque the bolts to 28 ft. lbs.
  42.  
  43. Connect the fluid cooler lines.
  44.  
  45. Install the rear crossmember. Torque the bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
  46.  
  47. Install the rear crossmember-to-transmission bolts. Torque the bolts to 33 ft. lbs.
  48.  
  49. Install the converter-to-driveplate bolts. Torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. on the 4-151; 26 ft. lbs. on the 6-258 and 8-304.
  50.  
  51. Connect the neutral start switch.
  52.  
  53. Connect the gearshift and throttle linkages.
  54.  
  55. On 8-304 models, connect the exhaust pipes at the manifolds.
  56.  
  57. Install the driveshafts.
  58.  
  59. Install the starter.
  60.  
  61. Install the fill tube.
  62.  
  63. Install the converter housing inspection cover.
  64.  
  65. Lower the vehicle.
  66.  
  67. Connect the transmission fill tube upper bracket.
  68.  
  69. Install the fan shroud.
  70.
