Air Conditioning Compressor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



6-258 Engine
1977-80
ALL 1981 MODELS, EXCEPT CALIF.
  1. Isolate the compressor. See General Information & Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Remove both service valves and cap the valves and compressor ports immediately.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator belt and adjusting bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper alternator mounting bolt and loosen the lower mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the idler pulley.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the compressor clutch wire. Remove the compressor mounting nuts and lift out the compressor. BE CAREFUL; IT'S HEAVY!
  12.  
  13. For installation, install the compressor, alternator and belt, idler pulley, and adjust the drive belts.
  14.  
  15. Install the service valves and purge the compressor of air. Open the valves.
  16.  
  17. Connect the clutch wire.
  18.  

1981 CALIFORNIA MODELS
1982-86 ALL MODELS
  1. Isolate the compressor. See General Information & Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery ground.
  4.  
  5. Remove the discharge and suction hoses from the compressor and cap all openings immediately.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the alternator and remove the drive belts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator from its brackets and set it out of the way.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt and remove the compressor.
  12.  
  13. For installation, install the compressor and alternator, connect the hoses and install and tension the drive belts. Connect the compressor clutch wire. Open the valves.

8-304 Engine
  1. Isolate the compressor. See General Information & Maintenance .
  2.  
  3. Remove both service valves and cap the valves and compressor ports immediately.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the alternator and remove the drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the alternator mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the compressor clutch wire.
  10.  
  11. Remove the compressor and mounting bracket as an assembly.
  12.  
  13. For installation, install the compressor and mounting bracket, install the alternator bracket, connect the clutch wire, install the belts, idler pulley, and adjust the drive belts.
  14.  
  15. Install the service valves and purge the compressor of air. Open the valves.
  16.
