1971-77
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Detach any interfering control cables.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical connections:
    1. Heater switch
    2.  
    3. Ground wire
    4.  
    5. Battery connector
    6.

  5. Remove the screws that hold the motor to the heater assembly and remove the blower motor housing and motor.
  6.  
  7. Remove fan and blower motor from blower motor housing.
  8.  

1978-86
WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING

The heater housing assembly has to be removed to get out the blower motor.

  1. Drain about two quarts of coolant.
  2.  


CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine side of the firewall.

  1. Detach the heater control cables.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the motor wiring.
  4.  
  5. Detach the water drain hose and the defroster hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts from the studs in the engine compartment.
  8.  
  9. Tilt the heater housing assembly down and pull it back toward the inside of the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the attaching screws and the blower motor.
  12.  
  13. On installation, make sure that the seals around the core tubes and blower motor are in place.
  14.  

WITH AIR CONDITIONING

It is not necessary to discharge the refrigerant system.

  1. Remove the hose clamps and dash grommet retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Remove the evaporator housing-to-instrument panel retaining screws and the housing mounting bracket screw.
  4.  
  5. Remove the blower mounting screws and remove the blower. Disconnect the wiring.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
