Two types of switches have been used on Jeep vehicles. One type is attached to the brake pedal rod end of the push rod, and cannot be adjusted. The other type is mounted on a flange attached to the brake pedal support bracket and is held in the off position by the brake pedal's being in its released position. Upon depressing the brake pedal, the switch plunger is allowed to move outward and contact is made within the switch to allow current to pass and operate the stop lights.
On some vehicles equipped with air conditioning, remove the screws attaching the evaporator housing to the instrument panel and move the housing away from the panel.
- Hold the brake pedal in the applied position.
- Push the stop light switch through the mounting bracket until it stops against the brake pedal bracket. Release the pedal to set the switch in the proper position.
- Check the position of the switch. The switch plunger should be in the ON position and activate the brake lights after a brake pedal travel of 3 / 8 - 5 / 8 in.
