1971 Transmission Brake

  1. Make sure that the brake handle on the instrument panel is fully released.
  2.
  3. Check the operating linkage and the cable to make sure that they don't bind. If necessary, free the cable and lubricate it.
  4.
  5. Rotate the brake drum until one paid of the three sets of holes are over the shoe adjusting screw wheels in the brake drum.
  6.
  7. Use the edge of the holes in the brake drum as a fulcrum for the brake adjusting tool or a screwdriver. Rotate each notched adjusting screw by moving the handle of the tool away from the center of the driveshaft until the shoes are snug against the drum.
  8.
  9. Back off seven notches on the adjusting screw wheels to secure the proper running clearance between the shoes and the drum.
  10.

1972-86 Models

  1. Make sure that the hydraulic brakes are in satisfactory adjustment.
  2.
  3. Raise the rear wheels off the ground and disengage the parking brake.
  4.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the brake cable adjusting rod, located directly behind the frame center crossmember.
  6.
  7. Spin the wheels and tighten the adjustment until the rear wheels drag slightly. Loosen the adjustment until there is no drag and the wheels spin freely.
  8.
  9. Tighten the locknut to lock the adjusting nut.
  10.
