Tapered Shaft Axles

An arbor press is necessary for this procedure.

  1. With the aid of an arbor press, remove the bearing from the axle shaft.
  2.  
  3. The new bearing must be installed with the use of the same press used for removal, or, bearing replacing tool J-2995.
  4.  
  5. If an inner seal, in the axle housing, was there when you removed the shaft, replace it with a new inner seal and pack the bearing with wheel bearing grease, making sure the grease fills the cavities between the bearing rollers.
  6.  

If there was no inner seal, don't install one. Don't pack the bearing with grease. The lack of an inner seal indicates that the bearing is lubed with axle lubricant.

  1. Axle shaft endplay can be measured by installing the hub retaining nut on the shaft so that it can be pushed and pulled with relative ease. Strike the end of each axle shaft with a lead hammer to seat the bearing cups against the support plate. Mount a dial indicator on the left side support plate with the stylus resting on the end of the axle shaft. Check the endplay while pushing and pulling on the axle shaft. End-play should be within 0.004-0.008 in. (0.1-0.2mm), with 0.006 in. (0.15mm) ideal. Add shims to increase endplay. Remove the hub retaining nut when finished checking endplay.

When a new axle shaft is installed, a new hub must also be installed. However, a new hub can be installed on an original axle shaft if the serrations on the shaft are not worn or damaged. The procedures for installing an original hub and a new hub are different.

  1. Install an original hub in the following manner:
    1. Align the keyway in the hub with the axle shaft key
    2.  
    3. Slide the hub onto the axle shaft as far as possible
    4.  
    5. Install the axle shaft nut and washer
    6.  
    7. Install the drum, drum retaining screws, and wheel
    8.  
    9. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels and tighten the axle shaft nut to 250 ft. lbs. If the cotter pin hole is not aligned, tighten the nut to the next castellation and install the pin. Do not loosen the nut to align the cotter pin hole.

  3. Install a new hub in the following manner:
    1. Align the keyway in the hub with the axle shaft key.
    2.  
    3. Slide the hub onto the axle shaft as far as possible.
    4.  
    5. Install two well lubricated thrust washers and the axle shaft nut.
    6.  
    7. Install the brake drum, drum retaining screws, and wheel.
    8.  
    9. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels.
    10.  
    11. Tighten the axle shaft nut until the distance from the outer face of the hub to the outer end of the axle shaft is 1 5 / 16 in. (33.3mm). Pressing the hub onto the axle to the specified distance is necessary to form the hub serrations properly.

    13. Remove the axle shaft nut and one thrust washer.

    15. Install the axle shaft nut and tighten it to 250 ft. lbs. If the cotter pin hole is not aligned, tighten the nut to the next castellation and install the pin. Do not loosen the nut to install the cotter pin.

  5. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder and bleed the brake hydraulic system and adjust the brake shoes.

Flanged Shaft

An arbor press is necessary for this procedure.

  1. Position the axle shaft in a vise.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retaining ring by drilling a 1 / 4 in. hole about 3 / 4 of the way through the ring, then using a cold chisel over the hole, split the ring.

  5. Remove the bearing with an arbor press, discard the seal and remove the retainer plate.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. The new bearing must be pressed on. Make sure it is squarely seated.
