Pitman Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Place the wheels in a straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark the pitman arm and gear housing.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the connecting rod/drag link from the arm.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark the pitman arm and shaft.
  10.  
  11. Remove the pitman arm nut and washer.
  12.  
  13. Using a puller, remove the pitman arm from the gear. Never hammer on the arm or use a wedge tool to remove it!
  14.  
  15. Install the pitman arm aligning the matchmarks on the arm and shaft.
  16.  
  17. Install the washer and nut. Torque the nut to:

    1971 w/Ross gear: 70-90 ft. lbs
     
    1971 w/Saginaw gear: 120-160 ft. lbs.
     
    1972-86: 185 ft. lbs.
     

  18.  

  1. Connect the connecting rod/drag link, or knuckle, to the pitman arm. Observe the following torques:

    Pitman arm-to-knuckle nut: 65 ft. lbs.
     
    Pitman arm-to-link nut: 70 ft. lbs. on models through 1979; 60 ft. lbs. on 1980-86 models.
