REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1971-75 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Set the front tires in a straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Pull the horn button from the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel nut and horn button contact cup.
  8.  
  9. Scribe a line mark on the steering wheel and steering shaft if there is not one already. Release the turn signal assembly from the steering post and install a puller.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel and spring.
  12.  
  13. To install, align the scribe marks on the steering shaft with the steering wheel and secure the steering wheel spring, steering wheel, and horn button contact cup with the steering wheel nut.
  14.  
  15. Install the horn button.
  16.  
  17. Connect the battery cable and test the horn.
  18.  

1976-86 Models

Some steering shafts have metric threads. These are identified by a groove cast into the splines.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the horn button from the steering wheel. Turn the button until the locktabs on the button align with the notches in the contact cup and pull upward to remove it. With the sport wheel, just pull the button up.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel nut and washer.
  8.  
  9. If the Jeep is equipped with a sport style steering wheel, remove the horn button, nut and washer, bottom retaining ring, and horn contact ring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the plastic horn contact cup retainer and remove the cup and contact plate from the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Remove the horn contact pin and bushing from the steering wheel.
  14.  
  15. Paint or scribe alignment marks on the steering wheel and shaft for reference during assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering wheel using a puller.
  18.  
  19. Position the steering wheel on the shaft, aligning the scribed marks.
  20.  
  21. Install the horn contact pin and bushing.
  22.  
  23. Install the plastic horn contact cup retainer and install the cup and contact plate.
  24.  
  25. If the Jeep is equipped with a sport style steering wheel, install the horn button, nut and washer, bottom retaining ring, and horn contact ring.
  26.  
  27. Install the steering wheel nut and washer. Tighten the nut to 20 ft. lbs. for 1976-77; 30 ft. lbs. for 1978-86 models.
  28.  
  29. Install the horn button. Turn the button until the locktabs on the button align with the notches in the contact cup. With the sport wheel, just push the button on.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
