CAUTION
Brake shoes contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

  1. Remove the driveshaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retracting spring clevis pin and the spring clip.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hub locknut, the nut and washer from the transfer case output shaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a puller, remove the brake drum and companion flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retracting springs and shoes from the backing plate.
  10.  
  11. Clean all parts with a safe solvent.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace any weak springs and clean the adjuster threads. Coat the threads with a LIGHT film of oil. It will be necessary to back off the adjusting screw wheels to allow drum installation.

  15. Adjust the brake.
