Fig. Fig. 1: Shift linkage adjustments on the AS-8F transmission

  1. Loosen the two adjusting nuts at the steering column shift lever.
  2.
  3. Set the transmission control lever and the selector lever in neutral.
  4.
  5. Tighten the adjusting nuts.
  6.
  7. On vehicles equipped with power steering, check the clearance between the selector linkage bellcrank and either the converter housing or the power steering valve body. If there is interference at either point, it will be necessary to provide such clearance. The usual method for providing clearance is by the installation of a new bellcrank and shift rods.
  8.

Chrysler 727 and 999 Models

  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Loosen the shift rod trunnion locknuts.
  4.
  5. Remove the lockpin retaining the shift rod trunnion to the bellcrank and disengage the trunnion and shift rod from the bellcrank.
  6.
  7. Place the shift lever in PARK and lock the steering column.
  8.
  9. Move the lever on the transmission rearward to the PARK detent. PARK is the last possible rearward position.
  10.
  11. Check to make sure that PARK is engaged, by trying to rotate the driveshaft by hand.
  12.
  13. Adjust the shift rod trunnion so that the pin fits freely in the bellcrank arm and tighten the trunnion locknuts. Prevent the shift rod from turning while tightening the locknuts.
  14.

All lash in the linkage must be eliminated to provide for proper adjustment. Lash can be eliminated by pulling downward on the shift rod and pressing upward on the bellcrank.

  1. Check that the engine starts in only the park and Neutral positions, and that all shift ranges work properly.
  2.
  3. Lower the truck.
  4.

1966-73 Turbo Hydra-Matic 400

  1. Remove the cotter pin, flat washer and spring washer from the adjusting block at the transmission end of the shift rod and remove the block from the shift lever.
  2.
  3. Make sure that the transmission shift lever is in the Neutral detent position.
  4.
  5. Place the selector lever in the Neutral position and hold it firmly forward against the stop.
  6.
  7. Loosen the locknuts at either end of the adjusting block and position the block on the shift rod, so that it may be freely inserted on the transmission shift lever without moving the lever. Tighten the nuts to 6-12 ft. lb. torque.
  8.
  9. Operate the selector lever to be sure that the transmission detents are engaging in their respective positions.
  10.

1974-79 Turbo Hydra-Matic

  1. Place the shift lever in Neutral.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the gearshift rod trunnion just enough to permit movement of the rod in the trunnion.
  6.
  7. Place the transmission outer range selector lever into neutral and tighten the trunnion locknut to 9 ft. lb. torque.
  8.
  9. Lower the vehicle and check lever operation in all ranges.
  10.

  1. Disconnect the throttle control rod spring.
  2.
  3. Use the throttle control rod spring to hold the adjusting link in the forward position against the nylon washer.
  4.
  5. Block the choke open and set the carburetor throttle off of the fast idle.
  6.
  7. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  8.
  9. Loosen both retaining bolts on the throttle control adjusting link. Do not remove the spring clip and nylon washer!
  10.
  11. Use a spare throttle return spring, or equivalent, to hold the transmission throttle lever forward against the stop. Hook one end of the spring on the throttle lever and the other end in the cast boss on the side of the torque converter housing.
  12.
  13. Push the end of the link to eliminate all lash, and pull the clamp to the rear so the bolt in the rod bottoms in the rear of the slot in the rod. Tighten the rear retaining bolt.
  14.
  15. Remove the spare throttle return spring from the throttle lever.
  16.
  17. Lower the truck.
  18.
  19. Remove the throttle control rod spring from the adjusting link and install it on the control rod.
  20.

6-258 With Chrysler 727 and a 3.31:1 Rear Axle

  1. Disconnect the throttle control rod spring at the carburetor.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  4.
  5. Use the throttle control rod spring to hold the transmission control lever forward against the stop.
  6.
  7. Hook one end of the spring on the throttle control lever and the other end on the throttle linkage bellcrank bracket attached to the torque converter housing.
  8.
  9. Block open the choke and set the carburetor throttle off of the fast idle cam.
  10.

On carburetors equipped with a throttle operated solenoid valve, turn the ignition lock to the ON position to energize the solenoid. Then, open the throttle halfway to allow the solenoid to lock and return the carburetor to idle.

  1. Loosen the retaining bolt on the throttle control adjusting link. Do not remove the spring clip and nylon washer!
  2.
  3. Pull on the end of the link to eliminate all lash and tighten the link retaining bolt.
  4.
  5. Remove the spring and lower the vehicle.
  6.

Chrysler 727 with the V8 Engine

  1. Disconnect the throttle control rod spring at the carburetor.
  2.

  4.
  5. Use the throttle control rod spring to hold the transmission throttle valve control lever forward against the stop.
  6.
  7. Block open the choke and set the carburetor throttle off of the fast idle cam.
  8.

On carburetors equipped with a throttle operated solenoid valve, turn the ignition lock to the ON position to energize the solenoid. Then, open the throttle halfway to allow the solenoid to lock and return the carburetor to idle.

  1. Loosen the bolt in the throttle control rod adjusting link. Remove the spring clip and move the nylon washer to the rear of the link.
  2.
  3. Push the end of the link to eliminate all play and tighten the retaining bolt.
