All 1977-78 California models and all 1979 models are equipped with a catalytic converter. Most models use a single pellet-filled unit, while some California models use a single monolithic type unit.
The pellet type contains beads of alumina coated with platinum and palladium, contained in a stainless steel canister. A plug is provided in the unit for replacement of the beads if they become fouled. The monolithic unit uses an extruded core resembling a honeycomb. The core layers are coated with platinum and palladium. This unit is not serviceable.
