Tailgate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION FC Series and Jeepster/Commando

  1. With the tailgate lowered, remove the three nuts and washers securing the tail light assemblies to the rear body panels.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the license plate light wire.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the left and right hinge plates and remove the hinge plates through the tail light openings in the body panels.
  6.  
  7. Support the tailgate and remove the support arms-to-tailgate bolts.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  10.  

1962-69 Wagoneer

  1. Remove the tailgate access plate and disconnect the wiring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tailgate seal cover.
  4.  
  5. Close the tailgate and, using a soft drift, drive out the hinge pins.
  6.  
  7. With the tailgate in the vertical position, the counterbalanced torque rods can be untensioned and pried from the clips attached to the body halves of the hinges.
  8.  
  9. Support the tailgate and remove the bolts holding the lower ends of the support arms to the tailgate. Remove the tailgate.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.

  1. Lower the tailgate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the side supports and raise the tailgate to about 45º.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the right side hinge and move the tailgate to the right to disconnect the left side hinge.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.  

Sport Truck Models

  1. Disconnect the chains.
  2.  
  3. Support the tailgate.
  4.  
  5. Unbolt the hinges and remove the tailgate.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.  

Don't fully tighten the hinges until all fasteners are installed and the tailgate position is correct.

ADJUSTMENT FC Series and Jeepster Commando



The fit of the tailgate may be adjusted by lowering the tailgate and loosening the hinge plate mounting bolts. Move the plate as necessary.

1962-83 Wagoneer, Cherokee and J-Series Truck, Except Sport Truck

Tailgate adjustment is similar to door adjustment, in as much as the hinges and striker plates are moveable. Shims are available to adjust the striker plates in and out.
