Manual Steering Gear

Check the steering gear lubricant level every 1,000 miles on vehicles through 1971, and every 5,000 miles on 1972 and later vehicles. The level should be at the filler hole. Use SAE 80 gear oil to replenish the supply if it is needed. Don't forget to replace the filler bolt.

To fill the Saginaw manual steering gear, which was optional on pre-1971 Commandos, remove the side cover bolt (opposite the adjuster screw) and fill the gear with SAE 80 lubricant to the level of the bolt hole.
