Axle Shaft, Bearing and Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1962-66 Independent Front Drive Axle

The following applies to either right or left side shaft. A special tool is needed for this job.

  1. Install tool #W-281, as illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hub cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drive flange snapring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the axle flanges bolts and washers.
  12.  
  13. Apply the brakes, and remove the axle flange with a puller.
  14.  
  15. Release the locking lip of the lockwasher, adjusting nut, and bearing lockwasher.
  16.  
  17. Back off on the brake adjusting cams or star wheel adjusters and remove the drum and bearings.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the brake hose from the wheel cylinder and remove the brake backing plate.
  20.  
  21. Remove the spindle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the axle shaft and U-joint.
  24.  
  25. The following steps apply to right side installation only:
    1. Install the shaft and U-joint into the housing, taking care not to knock out the inner oil seal.
    2.  
    3. Mesh the splined end of the shaft with the differential and slide it into place.
    4.  
    5. Install the spindle and bushing.
    6.  
    7. Install the backing plate and brake line.
    8.  
    9. Grease and install the wheel bearings and oil seal.
    10.  
    11. Install the hub and drum.
    12.  
    13. g. Install the bearing washer and nut. Tighten the nut until there is a slight drag on the bearings when the hub is turned, then back off the nut 1 / 6 turn. Install the locknut and washer.

    15. Install the drive flange and gasket on the hub and attach it with the six capscrews and lockwashers.
    16.  
    17. Install the snapring on the outer end of the shaft.
    18.  
    19. Install the grease cap and wheel.

  1. The following steps apply only to the left side axle shaft:
    1. Remove the retainer wire that holds the center universal joint rubber boot in place and pull the rubber boot back to expose the U-joint.
    2.  
    3. With someone to hold the center U-joint in place, slide the U-joint and axle shaft assembly into position in the housing. Mesh the splined end of the shaft into the center U-joint and axle shaft assembly and push it into place.
    4.  
    5. Replace the rubber boot and retainer wires.
    6.  
    7. Now, go back to Step 13 and follow substeps c through j.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hub cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive flange snapring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle flange bolts and washers.
  10.  
  11. Apply the brakes and remove the axle flange with a puller.
  12.  
  13. Release the locking lip of the lockwasher and remove the outer nut, lockwasher, adjusting nut, and bearing lockwasher. To remove the nut on the 1-ton truck, use wrench #DD-1245.
  14.  
  15. On vehicles with disc brakes, remove the caliper and remove the rotor.
  16.  
  17. On vehicles with drum brakes, back off the brake adjuster and remove the drum and bearings. Remove the backing plate.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spindle and bushing.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle shaft and U-joint.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal. Grease the bearing and seal. Tighten the bearing nut until there is a slight drag on the bearings while the hub is turning, then back off the nut 1 / 6 turn.

A special tool is needed for this job.

  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the axle shaft snapring, drive flange, pressure spring and spring retainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the outer locknut, lockwasher and adjusting nut, using tool #J-6893.
  8.  
  9. On models with disc brakes, remove the bolts attaching the caliper to the support shield and remove the caliper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rotor or drum.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the spindle support shield and remove the spindle and shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove the axle shaft.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the inner bearing adjusting nut to 50 ft. lb., then back off 1 / 4 turn while rotating the hub. Tighten the outer locknut to 50 ft. lb.

CAUTION
Install the spring retainer with the cupped side of the retainer facing inward.1980-83 Wagoneer and Cherokee and J-Series Truck See Figures 4 and 5

A special tool is needed for this job.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the disc brake caliper.
  2.  
  3. On vehicles without front hubs, remove the rotor hub cap. Remove the axle shaft snapring, drive gear, pressure spring and spring retainer.
  4.  
  5. On models with front hubs, remove the socket head screws from the hub body. Remove the hub body and the large retaining ring. Remove the small retaining ring from the axle shaft. Remove the hub clutch assembly from the axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the outer locknut, washer and inner locknut using tool J6893-03 or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor. The spring retainer and the outer bearing are removed with the rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the spindle and support shield. Remove the spindle and the support shield.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Install the shaft, indexing the splines with the differential side gear.
  16.  
  17. Install the spindle.
  18.  
  19. Install the support shield and rotor.
  20.  
  21. Install the inner wheel bearing locknut (peg on one side) and tighten it just enough to remove end-play.
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the inner locknut, while rotating the wheel, to 50 ft. lb., then back it off 1 / 6 turn.
  26.  
  27. Install the washer so that the inner tab is aligned with the spindle keyway. Be sure that the peg on the inner locknut engages the nearest hole in the washer.
  28.  
  29. Install the outer locknut and torque it to 50 ft. lb.
  30.  
  31. Remove the wheel.
  32.  
  33. On models without hubs:
    1. Install the spring retainer, pressure spring and drive gear.
    2.

CAUTION
Install the spring retainer with the cupped side of the retainer facing inward.

  1. Push the drive gear inward to provide clearance for the axle shaft snapring and install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Coat the rotor hub cap rim with Permatex Adhesive-Sealant No.3®, or equivalent, and install the hub cap in the rotor.
  4.  

  1. On models with front hubs:
    1. Install the hub clutch assembly in the axle.
    2.  
    3. Install the small retaining ring on the axle shaft.
    4.  
    5. Install the large retaining ring in the hub.
    6.  
    7. Install the O-ring on the hub body.
    8.  
    9. Install the hub body and tighten the socket head screws to 30 in. lb.
    10.

  1. Install the caliper and wheel.
