REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1962-66 Independent Front Axle

A special tool is needed for this job.

  1. Install tool W-281, as illustrated.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the front end on jackstands placed under the frame rails, behind the torsion bars.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. On 4WD trucks, matchmark and disconnect the front driveshaft at the axle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the steering linkage at the knuckles.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the brake hoses at the axle connection points.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the axle struts at the axle tubes.
  16.  
  17. Support the weight of each axle tube with floor jacks.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the ball joint studs.
  20.  
  21. Lower the jacks under the axle tubes, while applying pressure to the top of the tubes to disconnect them from the ball joints. When disconnected, lower the tubes all the way and remove the jacks.
  22.  
  23. Support the center joint with a floor jack and remove the U-bolts that attach it to the frame crossmember.
  24.  
  25. Lower the jack and remove the axle assembly.
  26.  
  27. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

Center joint U-bolts: 50 ft. lb.
 
Castle nut: 65 ft. lb.
 
Axle strut nuts: 95 ft. lb.
 

FC Series/Jeepster/Commando

1962-83 WAGONEER WITH SOLID FRONT AXLE 1962-86 J-SERIES TRUCK 1974-83 CHEROKEE
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the wheel covers and wheels.
  2.  
  3. Index the driveshaft to the differential yoke for the proper alignment upon installation. Disconnect the driveshaft at the axle yoke and secure the shaft to the frame rail.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the steering linkage from the steering knuckles. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle housing.
  6.  
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with a stabilizer bar, remove the nuts attaching the stabilizer bar connecting links to the spring tie plates.
  8.  
  9. On vehicles equipped with sway bar, remove nuts attaching sway bar connecting links to spring tie plates.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the breather tube from the axle housing. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link bolts at the spring clips.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake calipers, or drums, hub and rotor, or brake shoes, and the brake shield.
  14.  
  15. Remove the U-bolts and the tie plates.
  16.  
  17. Support the assembly on a jack and loosen the nuts securing the rear shackles, but do not remove the bolts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front spring shackle bolts. Lower the springs to the floor.
  20.  
  21. Pull the jack and axle housing from underneath the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

U-bolts: 80 ft. lb.
 
7 / 16 " Spring mounting bolts: 55 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 " Spring mounting bolts: 80 ft. lb.
 
Steering arm-to-knuckle: 65 ft. lb.
 
Jeepster/Commando
 
7 / 16 " Spring mounting bolts: 46 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 " Spring mounting bolts: 65 ft. lb.
 
Steering arm-to-knuckle: 65 ft. lb.

Spring shackle and pivot bolts: 40 ft. lb.
 
Steering arm-to-knuckle: 65 ft. lb.

Spring pivot and shackle bolts: 100 ft. lb.
 
9 / 16 " U-bolt nuts: 100 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 " U-bolt nuts: 55 ft. lb.
