Jeep Wagoneer/Commando/Cherokee 1957-1983 Repair Information
Reach up behind the speedometer head. On some older models, the speedometer cable is connected by a threaded ring. Unscrew the ring and pull the cable sheath from the head. The core may then be pulled from the sheath.
On later models, depress the spring tab at the point where the cable attaches to the head and pull the cable straight back away from the head. Pull the core from the sheath.
If the cable is broken, raise and support the vehicle and remove the cable from the transmission. Pull the broken end from the sheath.
When installing the cable, coat it with speedometer cable lubricant before installation.
