Manual Door Glass and Regulator

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION FC Series



  1. Remove the trim molding at the glass line.
  2.  
  3. Remove the arm rest.
  4.  
  5. Press in on the door panel and remove the pins from the door handle and window crank. Pull off the handle and crank.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining screws and lift off the door panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the access plate from the door frame.
  10.  
  11. Remove the button plug from the lower rear and upper front edges of the door.
  12.  
  13. Remove the five screws attaching the glass frame to the door: 2 at the rear edge of the door; three at the front edge of the door.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw attaching the lower front edge of the glass frame to the inside of the door panel.
  16.  
  17. Lower the glass and remove the spring clip and washer holding the window regulator arm to the lower glass frame channel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the weatherstrip clips from the rear edge of the door, near the lock. Remove enough weatherstripping to allow lifting the glass frame from the door.
  20.  
  21. Remove the door lock tumbler as described above.
  22.  
  23. Lift the glass and frame straight up and out of the door.
  24.  

Jeepster/Commando

  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two vent window frame bolts, one just above the upper door hinge mount, the other just below the hinge on the post side of the door.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw located on the door inner panel, just below the vent window lock, which secures the vent window frame to the door panel.
  6.  
  7. Open the vent window and remove the self-tapping screw in the lower weatherstripping.
  8.  
  9. Lower the window and pull upward and out on the vent window assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the access plate from the door frame.
  12.  
  13. Pry out the felt strips along the window channel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the retaining clip securing the regulator arm pin to the glass lifter channel, remove the arm pin from the slot in the channel and crank the regulator arm downward to free the glass channel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two hex nuts from the window stop, and lift out the stop.
  18.  
  19. Lift the glass up and out of the door.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of removal. When installing the glass, install the rear edge first, then the front edge. If the window does not operate smoothly, or bonds, the guide channels can be adjusted by loosening the attaching screws and shifting the channels until smooth operation is achieved.

1962-69 Wagoneer and J-Series Truck

FRONT DOOR
  1. Remove the door panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glass stop bracket.
  4.  
  5. With the door open, remove the two Phillips screws and starwashers retaining the outside door handle.
  6.  
  7. Hold the door and pull the handle forward and out of the door.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screws from the lock linkage control, push the control unit into the door cavity and lower it to the door bottom. Remove it through an access hole.
  10.  
  11. Remove the screws holding the window control mechanism to the door. Push the door latch into the door and lower it to the door bottom.
  12.  
  13. Temporarily install the window handle and lower the glass to gain access to the retainer. Lift the small projection on the retainer clip off of the concave portion of the pin, while sliding the retainer free of the groove in the pin.
  14.  
  15. Pull the pin out of the slot and crank the regulator to the extreme top position so it will not re-engage the lifter channel.
  16.  
  17. Lower the glass to the bottom of the door.
  18.  
  19. Push the lower end of the forward glass channel toward the front of the door to release the glass. Then, push the glass toward the front of the door to free it from the rearward channel.
  20.  
  21. Rotate the glass 90º and guide it up through the opening between the inner and outer panels.
  22.  
  23. Before installing the glass, make sure that the regulator is working properly.
  24.  
  25. Position the glass in the bottom of the door so that the lifter channel, at the bottom of the glass, will have the recessed portion of the guide groove toward the inner door panel.

On early production models, check the door glass run channels for slippage. If slippage is noted, an oval-head, split rivet must be installed at the topmost detent of the channel anchoring the glass run channel to the door window frame.

  1. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

REAR DOOR
  1. Remove the door trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glass stop bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear run channel attaching bracket.
  6.  
  7. Temporarily install the window handle and lower the glass to gain access to the retainer. Lift the small projection on the retainer clip off of the concave portion of the pin, while sliding the retainer free of the groove in the pin.
  8.  
  9. Pull the pin out of the slot and crank the regulator to the extreme top position so it will not re-engage the lifter channel.
  10.  
  11. Lower the glass to the bottom of the door.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner and outer weatherstripping.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper glass run channel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the stationary vent attaching screws, located under the door weatherstripping. Tilt the top of the vent assembly forward, approximately 1 inch.
  18.  
  19. Push the lower end of the forward glass channel toward the front of the door to release the glass. Then, push the glass toward the front of the door to free it from the rearward channel.
  20.  
  21. Rotate the glass 90º and guide it up through the opening between the inner and outer panels.
  22.  
  23. Before installing the glass, make sure that the regulator is working properly.

  25. Position the glass in the bottom of the door so that the lifter channel, at the bottom of the glass, will have the recessed portion of the guide groove toward the inner door panel.

  27. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

1970-83 Wagoneer, Cherokee and J-Series Truck

FRONT DOOR
  1. Remove the door panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glass stop bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower division channel attaching bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lock rod guide bushing. Move the lock rod aside.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts attaching the control assembly to the door panel. Lower the assembly to the bottom of the door.
  10.  
  11. Crank the door glass down and remove the retaining clip.
  12.  
  13. Lower the glass to the bottom of the door.
  14.  
  15. Push the lower end of the forward glass channel toward the front of the door to release the glass. Then, push the glass toward the front of the door to free it from the rearward channel.
  16.  
  17. Rotate the glass 90º and guide it up through the opening between the inner and outer panels.
  18.  
  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure that the pin in the regulator arm aligns with the slot in the lifter channel with the glass up in the channels.

REAR DOOR
  1. Remove the trim panel and water shield.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glass stop bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower division channel attaching bracket.
  6.  
  7. Crank the door glass down and remove the retaining clip.
  8.  
  9. Lower the glass to the bottom of the door.
  10.  
  11. Remove the inner and outer weatherstripping.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper glass run channel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stationary vent attaching screws, located under the door weatherstripping. Tilt the top of the vent assembly forward, approximately 1 inch.
  16.  
  17. Push the lower end of the forward glass channel toward the front of the door to release the glass. Then, push the glass toward the front of the door to free it from the rearward channel.
