  1. Make sure that the hydraulic brakes are in satisfactory adjustment.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Pull up three notches on the hand brake lever.
  6.  
  7. Turn the adjuster at the rear brake cable equalizer until a slight drag is felt at both rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Release the handbrake. Both wheels must turn freely.
  10.  

1962-83 Wagoneer and J-Series Truck

1974-83 Cherokee

1966-73 Jeepster and Commando

  1. Make sure that the hydraulic brakes are in satisfactory adjustment.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands. Disengage the parking brake pedal.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the locknut on the brake cable adjusting rod, located directly behind the frame center crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Spin the wheels and tighten the adjustment until the rear wheels drag slightly. Loosen the adjustment until there is no drag and the wheels spin freely.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the locknut to lock the adjusting nut.
  10.

FRONT CABLE

  1. Disconnect the cable at the hand brake lever.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the other end of the cable at the equalizer adjusting rod.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  6.  

REAR CABLES
  1. Back off the adjuster at the equalizer and disconnect the cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake shoes and disconnect the cable ends at the actuating levers.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the parking brake.
  10.  

FC Series, Jeepster and 1962-69 Wagoneer and J-Series truck, with Transmission Type Hand Brake

  1. Fully release the hand brake.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the cable at the hand brake lever.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hook from the spring at the actuating lever.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.  

1970-83 J-Series Truck and Wagoneer and Cherokee

REAR CABLES
  1. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the adjuster locknuts at the equalizer.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the cable from the center connector.
  6.  
  7. If the left cable has to be removed, remove the fuel tank skid plate.
  8.  
  9. Unclip the cable from the frame bracket and unhook the locating spring from the cable.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheels.
  12.  
  13. Remove the brake drums.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake shoes.
  16.  
  17. On vehicles with the Dana model 60 rear axle, remove the bolts attaching the the cable to the backing plate, unhook the cable end from the brake shoe actuating lever, and pull the cable out. On all other axles, unhook the cable from the brake shoe actuating lever, compress the lock tabs at the backing plate and pull the cable out.

  19. Installation is the reverse of removal.

FRONT CABLE
  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the equalizer at the front cable.
  4.  
  5. Unclip the cable at the crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front cable return spring at the parking brake lever.
  10.  
  11. Roll back the carpet and remove the front cable ferrule-to-parking brake lever retaining clip.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the cable end from the parking brake lever assembly. Remove the cable.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of removal.
