Rear Axle Unit

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Place an indexing mark on the rear yoke and driveshaft, and disconnect the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle tubes.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake hose from the tee fitting on the axle housing.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the frame mounting.
  12.  
  13. Remove the U-bolts. On vehicles with the spring mounted above the axle, disconnect the spring at the rear shackle.
  14.  
  15. Support the axle on a jack, remove the spring clips, and remove the axle assembly from under the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torques:

FC Series Truck



7 / 16 " U-bolt: 55 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 " U-bolt: 80 ft. lb.
 
Spring pivot bolts: 30 ft. lb.
 

Jeepster/Commando



7 / 16 " U-bolt: 46 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 " U-bolt: 65 ft. lb.
 
Spring pivot bolts: 40 ft. lb.
 

1962-69 Wagoneer and J-Series Truck



Spring shackle and spring pivot bolts: 40 ft. lb.
 

1970-86 Wagoneer, Cherokee and J-Series Truck



Spring pivot bolts: 100 ft. lb.
 
Spring shackle bolts: 100 ft. lb.
 
9 / 16 -18 spring clip bolts: 100 ft. lb.
 
1 / 2 -20 spring clip bolts: 55 ft. lb.
 

Bleed and adjust brakes accordingly.
