REPLACEMENTFC Series, Jeepster and Commando Models

  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. Remove the directional signal lever. A milled flat on the lever will accept a 1 / 4 in. wrench for facilitating removal and installation.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the directional signal harness from the frame harness. Remove the wires from each plastic connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the wires by inserting a screwdriver with a narrow blade into the terminal end of the connector. Insert the blade into the narrowest part (the groove) of the opening to depress the retaining tang and pull the wire out of the connector.
  8.
  9. Remove the harness loom.
  10.
  11. Remove the two retaining screws from the directional switch and the two retaining screws from the 4-way flasher switch.
  12.
  13. Pry out the horn contact button.
  14.
  15. Remove the two bowl attaching screws and allow the bowl to slide down the column.
  16.
  17. Tape the disconnected wires together. Fold some of the wires back to flatten the bulge.
  18.
  19. Attach a wire or heavy string to the turn signal harness and pull the harness out from the top of the steering column.
  20.
  21. To install the wiring harness, use the wire or string to pull the harness down through the steering column.
  22.
  23. Install the switch and assemble the steering column in the reverse order of removal and disassembly.

  1. Disconnect the battery and remove the steering wheel.
  2.
  3. Loosen the anti-theft cover retaining screws and lift the cover from the column. It is not necessary to completely remove these screws as they are held on the cover by plastic retainers.
  4.
  5. Depress the lockplate and pry the round wire snapring from the steering shaft groove. Remove the snapring, lockplate, directional signal canceling cam, upper bearing preload spring and thrust washer from the steering shaft.
  6.
  7. Place the directional signal actuating lever in the right turn position and remove the lever.
  8.
  9. Depress the hazard warning light switch, located on the right side of the column adjacent to the key lock on newer models, and remove the button by turning it in a counterclockwise direction.
  10.
  11. Remove the directional signal wire harness connector block from its mounting bracket on the right side of the lower column. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, use a stiff wire, such as a paper clip, to depress the locktap which retains the shift quadrant light wire in the connector block.
  12.
  13. Remove the directional signal switch retaining screws and pull the directional signal switch and wire harness from the column.
  14.
  15. Install the directional signal switch and assemble the steering column in the reverse order of removal.
  16.
  17. Remove the turn signal switch attaching screws and actuator arm, then remove the switch.
