Removal & Installation



Comanche, Wagoneer and 1984-93 Cherokee

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the hydraulic line at the master cylinder. Cap the line.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the pushrod at the clutch pedal. Remove the instrument panel lower trim cover for access, if necessary.

  1. Unbolt the master cylinder from the firewall. One bolt is accessible from the engine compartment, the other is accessible from the passenger compartment.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the mounting nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm); the hydraulic line fitting to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). Refill and bleed the system.

Grand Cherokee and 1994-98 Cherokee

The clutch master cylinder, reservoir, slave cylinder and connecting lines are sealed units and are serviced as an assembly only.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the slave cylinder and clip from the clutch housing.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the hydraulic fluid line from the body clips.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining ring, flat washer and wave washer attaching the clutch master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal.
  10.  
  11. Slide the master cylinder pushrod off the clutch pedal pin.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the clutch pedal bushing, replace as necessary.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clutch master cylinder reservoir from the dash panel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the clutch master cylinder stud nuts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the assembly from the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Position the assembly into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the clutch master cylinder stud nuts to 200-300 inch lbs. (24-34 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the reservoir and tighten the screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch master cylinder pushrod on the clutch pedal pin. Secure the rod with the wave washer, flat washer and retaining ring.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Insert the slave cylinder through the clutch housing into the release lever. Ensure the cap on the end of the rod is securely engaged in the lever. Tighten the bolts to 200-300 inch lbs. (24-34 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Insert the fluid line in the body clips.
