Fig. Fig. 3: ... then remove the fan assembly

  1. Remove the fan and viscous drive as an assembly.
  2.
  3. Remove the fan blade-to-viscous drive bolts and separate the assembly.
  4.

To install:
  1. Position the fan on the viscous drive. Install the bolts and tighten them to 187 inch lbs. (24 Nm).
  2.
  3. Position the mounting flange of the viscous drive assembly onto the pulley. Install the nuts and tighten them to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the accessory drive belts.
  6.
  7. Insert the shroud into its retaining tabs and install the upper bolts.
  8.

ELECTRIC FAN

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. If necessary to remove the fan assembly, partially drain the engine coolant enough to allow upper radiator hose removal.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  6.
  7. If necessary, disconnect the upper radiator hose from the radiator and secure the hose out of the way.
  8.
  9. Remove the upper fan shroud bolts.
  10.
  11. Lift the fan assembly up and out of the engine compartment.

To install:
  1. Insert the shroud into its retaining tabs. Install and tighten the upper bolts.
  2.
  3. Connect the upper hose to the radiator, if disconnected during removal.
  4.
  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

5.2L Engines

See Figure 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. The viscous fan drive and blade assembly is threaded into the water pump hub shaft. Remove the fan drive and blade assembly from the water pump by turning the mounting nut counterclockwise as viewed from the front while securing the water pump pulley. Do not remove or unbolt the fan drive and blade at this time.

Fig. Fig. 7: Fan blade and viscous drive

The threads on the viscous fan drive are right hand threaded.

  1. Remove the 2 fan shroud-to-upper crossmember nuts.
  2.
  3. Remove the fan drive, blade and shroud as an assembly.
  4.

WARNING
Do not place the viscous fan drive in a horizontal position. If stored horizontally, silicone fluid in the viscous fan drive could drain into its bearing assembly and the assembly would have to be replaced.

CAUTION
Do not remove the water pump pulley-to-water pump bolts. The pulley is under spring tension.

  1. Remove the 4 bolts securing the fan blade assembly to the viscous fan drive.
  2.

To install:
  1. Install the fan blade on the viscous drive. Install the bolts and tighten them to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  2.
  3. Position the fan shroud, viscous fan and blade into the engine compartment as an assembly.
  4.
  5. Position the fan shroud to the radiator. Insert the lower slots of the shroud into the crossmember. Install the upper
  6.

attaching nuts.

Ensure the upper and lower portions of the fan shroud are firmly connected. All air must flow through the radiator.

  1. Install the fan drive and blade assembly to the water pump shaft and tighten the nut.
  2.

Ensure there is at least 1 inch (25mm) between the tips of the fan blades and shroud.

  1. Connect the negative battery cable.
  2.
